I have bought my first ATi card, a HD 4890, on Vista 64-Bit, and when trying to install the Catalyst and drivers, I get an error messgae saying "Failed to load detection Drivers" and then the install shuts down.

I was able to install the 4800 series drivers through windows update, but not the catalyst control centre.   I have tried installing the catalyst on it's own, and get the same error message, I try installing the drivers on their own, same error message.

I have downloaded the files several times, in case there was a problem, same error message.  I unistalled the drivers and card, and re-installed, same error message.

What do I need to do to get the program to install, or when can I get the device detection drivers from so the program will install?

Right now I feel like I have a $400 paperweight and am starting to regret getting this card.

Thanks

Hi, wizard65..

I have recently had my first experience with ATI 4830 card running on AMD quad, custom machine.  After hours and hours of testing every device on the machine including sending it to the shop and let the geeks check it out, they found nothing wrong with anything. So I was left on my own..I finally narrowed it down to the graphics software, the card is great, but there was a problem with the Catalyst software that came with it.  It was to the point at times where I could not even boot up the machine, the monitor kept giving me the "no input data" message and that's what finally clued me in.  I had spoken with the geeks for 3 months by the time I figured it out myself..they had no idea, and denied that it could be the graphics since the card checked out fine. The only advice I can give you that helped me was to go to ATI/AMD site and download latest drivers (june 15/09) for your particular model. (unless you've already done that?) And make sure you totally uninstall everything to do with the old Catalyst and reboot, before trying to reinstall..that's very important, get rid of the old stuff, it'll mess you up.  That means cleaning up your registry, cleaning ATI out of the entire system, and also make sure you back up anything important you have saved, (do this at your own risk, make sure you know what you're doing)..and set restore point, I was a little perturbed to have to do all this, afterall, it was brand new, it should work, right??  And I got no help from the retailer..so it was time to go to the manufacturer.  I did not have to alter any of my .NET's at all like someone else in this forum was mentioning.  However, different problems require different solutions.  But in my particular case, it looks like AMD/ATI messed up with  Catalyst on the 4800 series, seems like lots of people out there having issues with that new Catalyst, I think AMD/ATI found the problem and fixed it now and I am finally happy...no more problem..so it seems the Catalyst story is finally reaching the public and should be taken care of shortly.

Make sure to read the release notes before proceeding.

Hello all,

I have had an ATI card, X850 to be exact, for a long time, love it but HATE the trouble that they put you through to update drivers.  I have had to remove every living breathing instance of ATI everytime that I wanted to update my drivers forever.  However, my latest problem is very very troubling and now I cannot get an answer since AMD is all over it.  When I tried to update, since my card is considered out of the loop, not being supported now, (makes me want to buy another one) the latest drivers, when updated, have caused my entire computer to boot back up to a black screen after the Windows splash screen.  This, in turn, has forced me to do a system recovery.  I cannot even get to the system to do a restore.  I hate this, and all that I can do now is run the card off of the original, ancient drivers that came with the card.  I am screwed.  Thanks ATI/AMD.  You have a super horrible problem and I know that you could not care less.  Buy another one?  Me?  I suppose I shall but guess what kind it will not be?  Yes, that's right.  YOu got it.  When I emailed to try to get help, then they sent me some crap about registering and I have been registered to ATI forever.  I just have wasted like days doing this crap.  Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to download all the updates for Windows alone?

Oh and I want to add that I have done this trial and error, and recovery crap, just to be sure, three times.  Yes, three times.  Updated all this windows mess and done all this three times.  Thanks ATI.
