I don't think this is exactly what Lobster had in mind when it came to more easily tracking down spam... but it works.

I'm not sure actually. It may be a mixture of both. Some appear to be very bot-ish and post only links or links with nonsensical blurbs like "thanks for reading" no matter what the thread may be about. Others have a better grasp of grammar and whatnot, so those might be coming from real people.

When I was in school I saw a presentation(free pizza ) by a security researcher who was into bot-nets. He gave one example where the bot-net would mine the emails of the infected machines pulling out specific names and places in order to produce more convincing spam. It seemed like it could work, so I'm not sure why we haven't seen more stuff like that happening. I guess the phishers out there are having enough success impersonating paypal and ebay.

Yeah, and forums will have a real problem when they'll become smart enough.

The more hits a post has, the more active it appears...

If there are bots then you would figure they would look for the most active posts

There are new types of spambot, powered by Markov chains.

There are now some Markov bots out in the chat networks that can carry on a conversation that will fool anyone into thinking they're human at least for a little bit.

These bots have been running a while and have "learned" a lot.

Nope, I'm not a bot !

You can tell if it's a bot with only one statement or question.

Of course a person can still trick the machine. That's missing the point here dude(although, MD has it right that some of these things might be further along than you think). Spam bots don't need to trick people in order to get past captcha and other kinds of filtering techniques they only need to trick other machines.
