My cable internet plan is for 5 Mb/s download speed and that is what I used to consistently get give or take. Lately, when testing at speedtest.net and a couple of other testing programs, the speed will hover at 5 Mb/s a couple of seconds and then spike sharply higher. I've seen it go as high as 57 Mb/s but usually it goes up to between 20-26 Mb/s. Upload speed is now consistent at around 1 Mb/s (without spiking) when I usually had half that. This is happening on a couple of computers since they share the same modem (all wireless). Is this an indication that perhaps the modem might be going bad?

You sure its not some type of power boost? I know comcast will up the speed for the first 20mb of a file or test, either upload or download, then thereafter it will go back to its normal speed. Who is your provider?

My provider is Charter. Maybe they are trying something like power boost, I didn't think of that. I'll ask them about it. I was hoping this wasn't a classic symptom of a modem going bad. Thanks.

I'd say it's more likely to be something wrong with the test. The speed boost thingies will usually increase speed from 5 to 8 or 8 to 10, or something small like that. Maybe your ISP is tinkering with things on their end and that's freaking the test out.

I finally found out that Charter just introduced a speedboost feature to their internet customers - at least in my area. The boost speeds were all over the map at first but have seemed to level off now to about 3X - 4X download and 2X upload. Thanks for the replies.

Well, like I said, I'm all over the map in download speed. LOL.
(Sorry Orn!)

EDIT: I'm not complaining though as my plan is for 5 Mb/s down and .5 Mb/s up.
