Well I *was* debating on getting an HP Envy 17 to replace my Long toothed DV7...

Specs as configured:
2.4GHz Core i5 (2.93GHz Turbo)
ATI Mobility HD5850
6GB DDR3
2x 500GB HDD
Slot loading BluRay drive
1920x1080 panel

Here is the thing however... The HD5850 can be paired with DDR3 (as is non GDDR), GDDR3 or GDDR5. The various reviews I have looked up on the HD5850 show that the use of anything but GDDR5 hurts performance a good bit. So here is where I start my adventure... GET READY!

05/19/2010 01:42:55PM Session Started with Agent (Julie M)

05/19/2010 01:42:55PM Charlie: "In regards to the Envy 17's ATI HD5850; Does it use GDDR 2, 3, 4, or 5; and what bus width was utilized (128-bit, 256-bit)?"

05/19/2010 01:43:59PM Agent (Julie M): "Thank you for contacting the HP Home & Home Office Store Chat. My name is Julie M."

05/19/2010 01:45:03PM Agent (Julie M): "I understand that you are inquiring on some components for HP Envy 17."

05/19/2010 01:45:38PM Charlie: "Yes, specifically the type of ram used on the HD5850."

05/19/2010 01:46:40PM Agent (Julie M): "I will be glad to give you the information."

05/19/2010 01:46:48PM Agent (Julie M): "I am happy that you considered purchasing an HP product. With HP, you are sure to get quality products."

05/19/2010 01:46:49PM Charlie: "Thank you."

05/19/2010 01:47:56PM Charlie: "Since this has a detrimental impact on it's graphical performance; my purchasing this system depends on this factor. Hence my curiosity."

05/19/2010 01:49:25PM Agent (Julie M): "I do apologize, but I do not have the information about the bus width."

05/19/2010 01:50:25PM Charlie: "That was not as important, do you happen to know if it uses GDDR3, 4, or 5?"

05/19/2010 01:50:32PM Agent (Julie M): "I can only provide the memory information. It used DDR3."

05/19/2010 01:51:08PM Charlie: "Oh, ok, well thank you for that information. That answers my question!"

05/19/2010 01:51:27PM Agent (Julie M): "HP ENVY 17 series is truly an excellent choice. I received a lot of positive feedback on that model."

05/19/2010 01:51:43PM Agent (Julie M): "How long do you plan on keeping the notebook?"

05/19/2010 01:51:44PM Agent (Julie M): "How do you plan to protect your notebook from accidental damage?"

05/19/2010 01:52:00PM Agent (Julie M): "Have you given any thought about how to protect the HP products once the standard warranty expires?"

05/19/2010 01:52:35PM Agent (Julie M): "If so, don't forget about our Extended Service Plans which will uplift the level of service found on the standard warranty. Each Extended Service Plan varies, but some include Accidental Damage Protection, Next Day Exchange, or House Call service and will"
protect you up to four years. I'm including the URL for you to view: http://www.shopping.hp.com/esp...slp/split/serviceplans

05/19/2010 01:52:39PM Agent (Julie M): "Is there anything else I can assist you with today?"

05/19/2010 01:53:11PM Charlie: "Wait, is that DDR3 or GDDR3? We are talking graphics ram and not system ram right?"

05/19/2010 01:54:38PM Agent (Julie M): "We do not have GDDR3 as an option."

05/19/2010 01:55:56PM Agent (Julie M): "Basically, Graphics Double Data Rate 3 is a graphics card-specific memory technology, designed by ATI Technologies."

05/19/2010 01:56:16PM Agent (Julie M): "GDDR3 has a hardware reset capability allowing it to flush all data from memory and then start again."

05/19/2010 01:56:31PM Charlie: "So we are talking system memory then. My original question was in regards to the memory onboard the graphics card. The only information given is that it has 1GB graphics ram but does not give its type."

05/19/2010 01:56:49PM Charlie: "So it uses the much slower GDDR3 instead of GDDR5?"

05/19/2010 01:57:32PM Agent (Julie M): "Yes. It has only 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 Graphics."

05/19/2010 01:58:35PM Agent (Julie M): "Is there anything else I can assist you with today?"

05/19/2010 01:58:35PM Charlie: "1GB of what; GDDR3 or GDDR5? The acer I passed on used GDDR3 on its ATI 5850, though ATI allows for GDDR5."

05/19/2010 01:59:49PM Agent (Julie M): "Yes. DDR3."

05/19/2010 01:59:53PM Agent (Julie M): "Is there anything else I can assist you with today?"

05/19/2010 02:00:11PM Charlie: "Sorry for being confusing. Is there a floor manager I could speak with? This is information I would not expect a sales rep to know (no offence)."

05/19/2010 02:01:01PM Agent (Julie M): "I am sorry that you are confused."

05/19/2010 02:01:13PM Agent (Julie M): "Yes. I have my floor supervisor."
05/19/2010 02:01:46PM Charlie: "Ok, thank you."

05/19/2010 02:02:08PM Agent (Julie M): "Please give me two minutes of your time."

05/19/2010 02:02:29PM Charlie: "Ok"

05/19/2010 02:03:17PM Session Ended

It appears from this that it uses GDDR3, but the rep seems to be contradicting herself. I also got dropped upon request of the floor supervisor lol.

I wanted to be sure before I was going to drop 2 grand, so I tried one last time...

I like number 2 MUCH better. She was proactive and genuinely tried to help, she also did not give out any bad info. Can't say the same for number 1 though... Bleh.

That still isn't surefire information, I recall when I was laptop shopping that there were some laptops (I think Dell) with the 8600M that had half the memory width of what the 8600M was advertised to have.

Short of making the call to customer support, I can't find any other info... The Envy 17 just started accepting orders iirc, so I hope I don't have to wait for in depth reviews to trickle out.
If someone was to make that call for me then that would be great . If it does have GDDR5 then I will order it now and it will be ship around the time I get home.
If it has GDDR3 then I will go with the 1600x900 panel and no Blu-Ray to compensate for ram bandwidth (plus make it cheaper); either way it's a much better kit than what I have:

C2D 45nm 2.5GHz
nVidia 9600m GT
2GB+4GB DDR2 800
2x500GB HDD (7200&5200 RPM)
BD\DVD RW Combo drive
1440x900 panel

My old laptop is good, but I need it to be an on-the-road gamer; which she is not.
