ATI might have only just launched its Radeon HD 6870 1GB and Radeon HD 6850 1GBcards, but enthusiasts are already looking to the next big thing: the company's Cayman-based Radeon HD 6970.
Chinese-language site Zol.com claims to have got its hands on benchmarks for the ATI Radeon HD 6970, although it's not revealing where the figures have come from.
The site is reporting, however, that the Cayman XT-based AMD Radeon HD 6970, believed to be the 1GB GDDR5 model, has performed admirably in the 3DMark Vantage test suite, scoring 23,499 3DMarks in Performance mode. In the Unigine Heaven benchmark, the card managed 36.6fps at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 with 4x anti-aliasing and 16x anisotropic filtering.
Those scores, which represent a pre-release version of the card with unoptimised drivers, are certainly a boost over the company's Radeon HD 5870 1GB card, which managed 19,337 3DMarks and 17.3 fps in Unigine Heaven at the same settings.
Impressively, the figures also beat Nvidia's current high-end card, the GeForce GTX 480 1.5GB, quite considerably: at the same settings, the GTX 480 1.5GB scored 21,106 in 3DMark Vantage and 29.5fps in Unigine Heaven.
Further details of the as-yet unannounced card aren't available, but it is rumoured to feature a TDP of 255W or higher, and require a six- and an eight-pin power supply connection.

Looks like nV won't be back this turn.
The 580 will have the promised one year and a half ago specs of the GF100.
The 580 will be good for something though: price wars. It could even influence the 6970's price with -$100.
As for the 6970, if we judge things by die size, it will be a lot more powerful then expected. If we disregard die size rumors, it could end up with anything beyond 5870+30%.
My minimum estimation was 30% better and the average one would be 50%. That could translate into +50% for the '70 and +30% for the '50.

No, the dual GPU 6000 series is rumored to be named the 6990. Won't know for sure until AMD releases the info.....same happened with the the 5000 series.....we all thought that it would be named the 5870 X2 like the previous two series line-ups.....but with the drop of the ATI name AMD decided to switch it up again apparently.

he means that the 6970 is benching between the 570 and the 580.
this is all based off of leaked benches.
it really depends on what price it comes out at-im thinking $379.99.
we will see in a few days when the benches from the real world come out, and the price of course.
i am happy with my 965 with a 5870 and 955 with 2x gtx460 msi hawks -i will skip the hex and 6xxx series and wait for bulldozer mext year.

That's the problem, it's all rumours at this time. But it would be great to have the $HD 6970 at a price range between $329 to $359 or less...
Currently it seems as though the HD 6970 will be equal or faster than the GTX 580.

Exactly.....it is all rumors until the card is released and in the hands of the consumer....no fanboyism here Mime....just get really tired of people spouting off at the mouth over hear-say....especially when the product is not officially released....and form someone on their first post too...hmmm....tsk tsk.

I would have to agree... bad form, if nothing else. It wasn't you I was considering roasting.
There's always leaked benches, they're always screwed up and wrong, and a few people always go bonkers over them anyway. It's been that way ever since I started keeping track of these things. I wish I had enough free time to waste it being like that.... it must be nice.
