I noticed this page at Tyan
http://www.tyan.com/support/ht...thlo...on_opteron.html' ">http://www.tyan.com/support/ht...lon_duron_opteron.html

Some of the Opteron motherboards don't support 246 (or even 244) Opterons.
Is this true for other vendors too?

Why is this?

I was considering a lower cost M/B, and 240's in the near term, until I noticed some of the boards had a limited upgrade ceiling. I'd like to imagine upgrading to a 248 next year, when, I hope, prices come down, but I'm less sure this will work.

I think it would be helpful to clarify so that people don't expect too much (or too little) futire proofing.

TIA

Im sure that this would be an issue with the BIOS rather than the motherboard, find it very hard to believe it will only support 2 speed grades when there are faster CPU's available.

Id check with Tyan and see what their response is on this issue.

i concur with seaQuest.

There should be no reason that a board spec'd for 240, 242, and 244 level opterons should not support the 246. It's a multiplier change only; same HT bus speed, etc.

definitely check with Tyan and review the release notes for the latest BIOS.

cheers,

dave
