As you can see from my sig I have a Geforce 4 MX 440. Its an MSI and I swear the best one ever made. Ive been playin Doom 3 at 800x600 with all special effects on and all settings on low and it runs it fine around 36fps. (that sucks cuz I usually play cs at 100fps).

Anyways I will be getting a bonus in 3 or 4 months and will spend about $1500 on a new system. I just don't really want to wait that long for my gfx, so should I just buy a cheap $75-$125 card for now($125 would be kind of pushing it) that way I can still use this as a second PC when I build my new one? If so plz recommend some, Im looking on newegg now and benchmarks and Im just getting so confused.

Oh yeah, and I bought a 9800SE a couple months back and hated it, sent it back. (now kind of wishing I kept it for the $119 I spent for it)

WHY NOT AGP YOU @$#&!#@!

Oh well, is it worth upgrading to one of these when Im pretty broke the way it is. Or should I just wait till i can build my new system?

Sup, like the name...cept you spelled it wrong...kinda feels like blasphemy.. j/k. So what are you planning to put into your new system? I seriously dont think it would be worth it to get an FX, since those are like the ba$tards of the GeForce series, I say keep what youve got, and then when you have the money, get an awsome card like a 6800 GT, never half-upgrade because youll hate yourself later for not going all the way, and youll have lost a hundred bucks you could have used for something else. Dont let the upgrade bug get ahold of you so soon, wait til youve got the money.

ya but I can see where he comes from it's not that easy to have a computer with a card like that I have a 9200SE and it's crap I can't play most of the games I have to put everything down and it still goes slow I want to upgrade as well to something in the middle range

Geforce 4 mx 440 is such a nasty card...and not in a good way im sure an upgrade to anything would see a decent/massive change in your fps. If your playing doom3 a bit then nvidia might be the way to go, since they are officialy the best card to use with doom3. Then again i hear that mainstream ati cards like the 9600 pull better fps in half life 2

I'd get a 9800SE because of the modding.

P.S. Strange thing that doom 3 runs better on mx400 than fx5200...

like you, I'd bought one of those Powercolor 9800SE's hoping it would soft-mod into a Pro ($119 price tag tipped me off, but I could be wrong....) mine didn't, but it did overclock, but it couldn't outbench my 64MB 9500np that DID soft-mod , so I RMA'd it and bought my MSI RX9800...

Like KoolAid said, the absolute best option out there for $100 is a 9500pro off of ebay, or if you can find one, a 9500np with 128mb ram in an "L" shaped configuration, and a Red PCB, preferrably made by Sapphire. They are 9700 Pro's with 4 pixel pipelines cut off.

I have to tell you, I had a Visiontek Radeon 9100 64mb that was an excellent card. Like the old geforce 2 gts, it has a 4x2 pixel pipeline architecture, and it really makes a difference if you can't get an 8 pipe card.

Of the choices you've made, I'd stick with a name I know, Sapphire. If you can't get a 9500Pro off ebay, go with the Sapphire 9600Pro from Newegg.

Take a look at this 9600Pro. It looks as if it was built upon a 9700 PCB, note the "L" shaped memory (and the smaller memory chips, possibly BGA, 3.3 ns), and the place where an external power connector would have been. With shipping, it's $11 more, but I think it would be worth considering.

One thing to keep in mind when buying a 9500 to softmod: if you're buying it used, and if the description doesn't explicitly state it's softmoddable, there's an excellent chance that it isn't. Why do you think they bought it, and why do you think they're selling it?

Also, Overmind, Doom 3 will probably look better on the 5200, because the MX440 supports.. pretty much nothing.

I will explain it for you but I dont do it for many people. I play CS online competively and there are a ton of Sephiroths. So i decided to be different, so Im the only Sepheroth.

The point is will I be able to play any of the new games if I upgrade to a middle card now on this system after I build my new one. I'd like to keep both computers.

When i upgrade Im getting AT LEAST a 6800GT and A64 3800+.

Sorry for the multipost, i dont know how to quote multiple people in one.

The other thing, Id like to buy it from newegg, I REFUSE to buy anything from ebay. I got screwed 2 out of 3 times I got stuff there. Stupid NES Cartriges.
