I don't know where you are geographically, but you can get a 9700 Pro from newegg for $249. If I was looking for a new video card today that's probably what I'd get.

A FX5600 is fairly slow. I'd recommend a Radeon 9600 pro($150-$200) or maybe a Radeon 9800/9800SE($240-$290)

Stay away from any type of 5600. They're total crap. Grab yourself a 9600XT or 9700 Pro.

I'd recommend either the Radeon 9600 XT or the GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. You can't go wrong with either. Conversely, you might be able to get your hands on a 9800 non-Pro. Circuit City is having a deal where they're only $200.

The FX 5900's are pretty good. About equal to a 9700 Pro or a 9800 non-Pro.

Silly Question, maybe, but you want this for gaming?
Because right now ATI seems to hold the gaming crown.
But if you want the card for content creation - 3D rendering and OpenGL support - nVidea has a better reputaion for stability.

I would go for the nVidia mainly because they seem to be able to write drivers that work. The amount of ATI cards i have seen that wont start working properly until months after release because of crap drivers is astounding. So nvidia still have their problems, but they are nevertheless more reliable!

I'll be using mine mostly for gaming and some video editing. I know ATI usually benchmarks higher, but most games it seems are written to work with the newest Nvidia cards, and if there's a problem, Nvidia puts out new drivers quite often. I've seen a lot of games I play that have issues with newer ATI cards, and it always seems to be awhile before they release updated drivers. Only aspect I haven't been terribly pleased with the Nvidia cards is the anti-aliasing (darn you jagged edges!!!

Ok, even though I'm a diehard NVIDIA fan, I feel I should comment on ATI and the issue of drivers. As you can see from my sig, I'm using a Radeon 9500 Pro. I have to say that I haven't had a single problem with this card or ATI's drivers. The whole idea of ATI's drivers being inferior to NVIDIA's is, as far as I'm concerned, a dead issue. Moreover, ATI has committed to releasing a new driver approx. every month to take care of any issues that are still outstanding. A prime example is the hot fix they issued to take care of problems occurring in Call of Duty. I consider ATI's drivers to be right up there with NVIDIA's.

ATI's driver problems are no longer in stability from what I can tell, but rather optimizations in how things are done.
So I would say the stability of ATI drivers is a dead issue, but the need for optimizations is another. ATI uses a lot of shortcutting when rendering a scene that nVidia doesn't. 3Dcenter did a great write up of how ATi's bilinear filtering blows chunks compared to nvidia's. Also that ATi uses 6 bits per color channel on a texture while for precision you should be using 8..
While I know some of these things are hardly visible its the principle of the matter.. And go ATi more bang for the buck...

My take on this: I own 5 Radeon's from 7200 VIVO, up to 9600 I also own a GeForce FX 5600 and 5950 Ultra. In the mid-range I like my Radeon 9200 and 9600 over my 5600. But on the high end, I LOVE my 5950 Ultra

ATI has been releasing drivers fairly regularly lately too. They're just as stable as nVidia's and have been since the Catalyst drivers for the Radeon series. I'm running a 9800np (these are out of production or very limited from what I've learned) and I love it. Haven't overclocked it at all yet (don't want to eat the $260 I paid for it if it blows) but I'm pulling ~12k 2k1 3dmarks when my 1700+ was at stock speeds and using only 256MB RAM. The Radeon 9600XT is another great deal although not quite as fast as the 9800np and actually I think with the Best Buy deal for the 9800np, the 9600XT is about the same price. [/rambling]
