I use "Smart System Scan" because it's the default and haven't tried any of the others, and I don't really care.

I usually prefer using the complete system scan. I have compared it with the smart scan option and the verdict reached is something like:

1) Smart system scan = After every 2 days
2) Complete system scan = Once a week

I do it once a month on full system scan (Ad-Aware SE that is), it never picks up anything other than tracking cookies (if I've been too lazy assed to delete them before the scan).

I usually reserve the full system scan for really bad infections and my user seems like the type that they will click on anything. So most of the time I use full system scan. I onlyuse the smart system scan if there is only one profile being used on the computer or on my computer for random scans. I know my computer isn't infected as bad as my clients computers.

If I use the full system scan I will usually use it in conjunction with spybot 1.3 and install a pop-up blocker if my user doesn't already have one, like yahoo's new toolbar with anti-spy.

I use smart scan every so often... like hardly ever, cause I don't get any spyware, so Ad-aware is completely pointless on my system, I use it just to make sure.

Smart scan.

Only once, out of maybe 20 uses, did full system scan find 1 adware that smart scan didn't.

Spyware/adware aren't like viruses, they don't really try and hide themselves, and smart scan will get them.

I do a custom scan of only a few of my partitions. Once in a while I'll do a complete scan. But I use FireFox anyway, so even the drives I do scan once a week barely ever come up with anything.
