Well my dad's friend has a spare laptop, so she's giving it to my sister since my sister doesn't have a PC in her new house. Now she has a copy of XP for the laptop, and that's it.

My sister's in college, but everyones pretty much broke right now. I don't exactly want to say "ok, now you can go pay $1xx for M$ office" so I was thinking of using Openoffice.

Problem is, OpenOffice defaults to...well....OpenOffice formats, which isn't good for things like powerpoints that she would need to present, or documents that she would need to work on elsewhere.

SO is there a way I can make OO default to M$ filetypes like .doc .ppt etc?

I believe you are going to have to open each program...

but go to Tools
Options
Then choose Load/Save and the General Section of that category.

There you can change the "always save as" type.

OpenOffice supports MS 2003 and under file formats
It doesnt support the new 2007 fileformat as of yet.. (at least i dont think so)
But when you installed it you should have gotten an option to make MS office formats open under OpenOffice by default.. did u not?

Yeah that's to let OO open those files. I'm talking about letting OO save to those file types AUTOMATICALLY. My sister's not a PC whiz and probably either wouldn't know or wouldn't remember to select ".doc" each and everytime.

u can also use 2007B2/TR.. (if the specs can run it)

i think its more.. MS trials are 90 days.. and because its beta, it might be "until the final product is released"
