Oh really? In my eyes, Laptops beat desktops if your not worried about upgrading for a while for gaming purposes. If your doing media apps or regular apps and need an extra kick you can always upgrade the RAM or processor. Plus its portable and with the same hardware you get equal or just a little less than the preformance you get with the desktop. Plus a laptop is portable, which really beats a desktop if someone needs to move around. It all depends on the application. For gaming or as a really power workstation or server, I'd say desktop, but for anything else, such as media editing, regular app, running a basic server or even using it as a regular workstation, a laptop would be fine.
