Well I've been out of the loop for a while regarding video cards in general, and for laptops in particular (last I remember the X700 was the one to get )
So I'm wondering what happened since then. Does ATI still have the edge, or is it nVidia now ? I read somewhere that the best one out there is the nvidia 512 7950 GTX, is that accurate ?

I'm more interested in the 14/15.4" video cards... Most laptops I came across use the ATI x1400 or 1600, and nvidia 6600, 7300, 7400 and 7600. How do they compare ? Is it wise to go beyond those on a 15.4 ?

That is a really hard question to answer, and when I was purchasing my laptop I looked at the following:

Processor
Video Card (with Screen)
Warranty!!!

Those were my three main categories. I could have got a laptop with a better video card than the x600 I got in my laptop from May of 05, but I wanted a good warranty and a 15.4 " screen. My observations have shown that most 15.4" screen laptops have good to really good mid range cards, not the X1800s, 7800s, 7900s, etc.

In the future, laptop can use external high speed video cards using External PCIe cable and connector. There is also CBB / Common Building Block standard that enable laptop user to interchange components with other types/brands. Perhaps there will be a CBB video card component.

Cables will be developed for all PCI-Express link widths (including x1, x4, x8 and x16) and external devices will be able to use signalling rates of up to 2.5 gigatransfers per second (GT/sec), possibly doubling to 5 GT/sec later on. The speeds are limited to the host, the adapter and the cable but according to the specification's outline, the future looks promising. External PCI-Express products are expected on the market in less than a year."
