This is a tutorial on how to add physx abilities to your ATI based rig. I my self use a 9800 GT SSC as my dedicated physx card. used with my twin Asus 5870 HD x2 in xfire.

Added 7/24/2010

Latest on hybrid physx on ATI.

Nvidia drivers 257.21

nVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.10.0224

NV PhysX Tweaker 1.0

physx patch v1.04ff

games tested as pass thus far are,

Turok

metro 2033

batman AA

3dmark vantage

fluid mark

cryostasis

How to enable and install.

1. install 257.21 - 258.98 tested as pass

2. install physx system drivers

3. run patch, make sure all nv processes are shut down in task manager first. Might need to run in safe mode, I did not.

4. install physx tweaker

5. Restart the system

6. expand NV display port to ATI display port. This is done via windows display settings.

7. start physx tweaker ad enable physx

8. Start NCP (nvidia control panel) disable ALL eye candy in settings to prevent problems with the ATI eye candy.

your done.

results for vantage with 258.98 drivers

ORB compare

Nice guide Guru, very helpful...specially the fact that you mentioned that 9800Gtx will decrease performance....

Like I mentioned a 9800 GTX + AKA 250 GTS would be about the lowest GPU for physx processing I would recommend using.

260 275 285 GTX ideal.

Since I only have two PCIe slots on my board, how do you think this would work with one 5970?

Not that I can afford both a 5970 and a 260 atm...

one would think it should ROCK.

5970 HD = dual 5850 HD with added cores so it should just kill in performance.

some decent overclocking and a 5970 will keep up with dual 5870,s.

I have to think what to do since I'm about to order a replacement for my temporary 5770 now.. it's tempting though!

Been very happy with how its turned out. Never realized how much I missed the physx eye candy lol.

But I like my 5870,s, Amazing GPU,s. This way I get the best of both lol.

For me, I already had the 285 GTX lol. Was just a matter of convenience.

Best would be if ATI could find a solution for this otherwise but if I feel I can afford to do this thing I will.

Nice post Guru, PhysX is a powerful engine that ATI owners can now tap into!

I ditched my 8800 GTS SSC and opted to pull my GTX 260 out of my backup comp for PhysX.
Attempetd several Vantage passes with the 260 as the dedicated PhysX card, only to have the "Nvidia display driver stop responding".
Then each time, after I closed Vantage thru task manager, it would BSOD.
This is odd because I didn't overclock the 260 and stuck with my stable 285 overclock.
I'm thinking Vantage puts more stress on the primary (285) when a PhysX card is enabled.

So my first attempt was unsuccessful, but will try with a lower overclock with the 285.

Any ideas here???

bump the PCI-E to 104, this was a MUST for me to get the PCI-E rails to take the load.

lower clock on the 285 might be needed but I kinda doubt it.

My 285 runs 731/1620/2850 flawless with mu dual 5870,s

Thanks Guru, will definitely give that a try.

Just ordered Bad Company 2, can't wait to see how it looks/runs with the new setup.

Yes - The newest physx build works fine, I run the latestmy self.

9500 is super low end. Doubt it will run physx more the low settings.

9800 GT to 250 gts is more ideal for mid to high physx settings.

best value PPU ATM would be GT240 as a PPU it ticks all the right boxes and theyre cheap..(here at least as the 9800GT is rare to comeby eol, and the gts250 is still pretty expensive too compared to the gt240)

for physX you want high shaders/cuda cores clock speed and memory bandwidth etc doesnt really matter so much.. (well they do improve performance but primarily core count is what determines physX performance.

9800gt 112 cores
gt240 96cores
9600gt 64 cores (lowest recommended fullstop)

$80.00 to $85.00 price the price is right. Not tried one yet to see if it would work ok.

For my setup a 9800 GT was no where near enough. It Killed my performance.

For his needs, it just might work. Hard to say with out trying it lol.

Hy Frnds,

Thanx for the valuble insight, U cleard lot of my confusion.

So with GT240 I should expect par performance nither it should pull down my HD5770 and nor improve over all performance, right!

Wat do U think!

Hy one more thing, are there dedicated PPUs?(Just curious)

Cheers!!!!!!!

Hard to say till you try it.

In theory, it should not hurt performance in the slightest. You should see a nice boost in physx based games. If it works right, you will see no loss in none physx games.
