ageia made a dedicated ppu before they were bought out by nvidia. even if you were to find one it wouldnt be as good as current cards in the price range youre looking at. personally a gt240 would be good for what your after.. will enable you to play physX in games which support it and it shouldnt drop performance in anything else either.

performance wise the gt240 isnt all that great on its own...(much more dissappointing than initial benchmarks for the ddr5 version as it was meant to out perform the 4670 but in real world benches it turned out to be a bit of a flop) but it is a 40nm low power card which is great for a HTPC and even better for a ppu. so its not a system drain unlike the 9800gt so it would be a more worthy investment. esp if you want physX

Hi, thanks so much for this info.

I have a MSI 5870 and have just purchased a MSI GT 240 to become my dedicated PhysX card.

Followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. My CPU score went from 19335 to 40650 in Vantage!

Many thanks.

Hi PC-Guru, thanks for the thread, very helpful and looking forward to trying this. I have a 5970 and GTX 260 Core 216 55nm card to try on my EVGA Classified E760 board. My question though is, I've been using MSI AB solely for the voltage adjustment, so when you say disable MSI AB beforehand, does this also include any voltage tweaking? I'm used to running @ 925/1200. Otherwise I'm pretty much screwed for serious oc'ing (beyond 850 core) on the 5970 and don't think it's worth it to do this. I usually just start up AB, adjust voltage and then shut it down right away since it doesn't play well with CCC at times with regards to software fan control. Thanks in advance.

sadly MSI AB all builds will no longer work once it detects the nvidia GPU with the ATI GPU

It instantly breaks the AB application.

So far all other overclocking apps other then ATI overdrive no longer work as well.

I my self use ATI overdrive and set my GPU,s to 910/1225 each stock volts. Does the trick for me.

questions?
can you use MSI AB once all is running, or can you use anything else to OC the ATI cards with?
have you tried just 1 5870 with the 285? or did you just use the 9800 with 1 card.
(thinking of trying it with my 5870 and one of my 260s)

For me MSI AB shows no clock controls for the ATI cards but only for the nvidia card . But only when the nvidia card was added.

The clock speeds on the ATI cards in MSI AB are just 0 out and you cant change them.

if you go to settings.. general there is a dropdown to select gpu :/

though as mentioned before.. i suggest closing CCC if using AB tho

also are you using the latest version of msi AB?

Yes 1.51 AB

Also yes man when I select ether of my 5870 HD in the drop down list the clock speeds are zeroed out and can not be changed.

CCC open or closed makes no difference, it is the dedicated physx card thats broke it.

My proof

It will not let me adjust anything other then 285 GTX clocks.

Both 5870 HD clocks are broke but ONLY when dedicated physx card is in.

NVidia messed up this morning and posted up the new beta drivers (NVidia 257.17) that didn't have the restriction in place to not allow Physx to run when another GPU is present that is not NVidia. They have since corrected the beta software pack with the restriction put back into place....but not before we got a copy of the original....

Link to download (Win 7 x64).

This package includes the Physx install pack from Metro 2033......message from the poster of the file....

"oh, and for the people who are having issues. i had some issues installing the current physx package. the driver installer seemed to not install it. i ended up getting it to work with the metro 2033 standalone physx package in the install folder. and when ever you make a large leap in driver versions, its a good idea to un install all of the drivers."

"there is the driver i can confirm works. packed with the 9.10.0222 physx package from metro 2033.
pulled before it was patched.

hope it helps. also, spread this ***** around. hopefully genl will get back on the trail.
or nvidia will just stop being douches.

Not sure my friend....I have two strikes against me here....I have never owned an NVidia GPU so I am not familiar with the software......and I have not installed my NVidia card into my rig yet to try the patch method....

Here is a link to the thread on overclockers.net though for you to look at....maybe you can pick up on their terminology.

....so with the hack mod in place previously you didn't have PhysX checked on the ATI cards before correct?

Does this mean it works then or does it mean that it is broke?

testing shows it to be fully working, give me a sec and I will show ya fluid-mark test via hardware physx.

It is just not listed on nvidia CP so I just used a registry hack to enable physx by changing it to 1 = On in registry.
