I'm wondering if my motherboard, a Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2 will be able to use the Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition Processor. I know it's only a socket AM2 but it's still compatible on that front. I need to know if there's anything else it needs? Will it put out enough power to the CPU? How much could I feasibly overclock on the stock heat sink? Is there any real disadvantage to not having the HT 3.0 that AM2+ has?

Hmm, that's unfortunate. It looks like I will be buying a new motherboard then... Any suggestions?
Would you say the q6600 is still the best bang for buck quad-core? The only reason I wanted a 9950 was because it was comparable to the q6600 and I was hoping to not have to change boards.
Any other suggestions are welcome too, I may want an SLI board, a buddy of mine has an extra 8800gt and I could borrow that off him to use in combination with mine.

msi appears to be the most reliable and least painful mobo to pair with a phenom. asus is 2nd. a few posters swear by ECS, Foxconn, Biostar or AsRock.

i'm waiting for the msi hydrogen: http://www.tomshardware.com/re...rts-2008,1779-14.html
it's not released yet.

yes, the q6600 get better overclocks and benchmark results when overclocked. phenoms can compare favorably to most stock intel quads when overclocked.

Well, I'll probably just go for a q6600 in that case, that is a nice looking board. The temps seem high to me though for water-cooling.
Know of any cheap decently overclockable 775 sli boards? I realize that's a lot to ask, but I can hope
Maybe I'll just wait for the Corei7's to come out... tri-channel ram will be sweet.

I know, but I figure if I'm buying a new board and cpu I might as well wait for the next series since they're coming out soon.
I was going to do that anyways, but I was hoping I could've used the 9950 with the board I have now.

A chance eh? I think the one I was looking at was 125W come to think of it... http://www.directcanada.com/pr...GHBOX&manufacture=AMD
Think it would work? Would I be creating a big bottleneck with my board on it? Could it hurt to try?

since that board supports the 6400+ and FX62 furnaces,I dont see why cant they handle the 9950 but usually mobo manufacturers are the one's to blame for not updating the bios'es I've seen several geforce 6100 boards supporting the 9850

lol if your skilled , I mean very skilled with a high knowledge in computer building and overclocking you just might pull it off. But due to it not being a supported CPU in bios you will need to do this manually your self. Every last setting will need to be set your self and that's volts, timings, ratios.

Well, I'm not skilled, but I'm not unskilled either, and I don't think this board allows me to set all those things anyways. I think I've changed my mind though, I think I'll either buy a e8500 and new board now or buy something when nehalem comes out and I'm going to watercool it. I'm excited.
