I have an older Gigabyte MB with an AM2 socket and was wondering if an AMD Phenom
II X4,with an AM3 socket would be compatible. Thanks for any help.

Probably not, as AM2 boards usually go with DDR2 type RAM only and AM3 are wiith DDR3.
At Gigabyte's webpage you can find the processor support list for your current motherboard.
