okay my dad finally gave into me to build him a new pc
it will be an upgrade from a 266p2 compaq lol

he wants to be able to upgrade in the future and have good compability with future stuff

so i was thinking whast a good budget 939 board
a a 64 3000+
512mb ram
a 9600xt
a case im looking for one now dosent matter what it looks like gonna be in a enclosed space
a 160gb hard drive
and he wants a dvd/cd burner

I bet noone would agree with me on this but Id get a socket 754, save the money and get a better processor (3400+) and by the time you need to upgrade that you might as well buy a new mobo with PCI-e and whatever else they have out by then.

If your just trying to go cheap a 9600 or 9600pro is a good cheap card. Should be able to find for $100 or less.

I got the board for 136 @ ZZF with free 2 day shipping.

Also a good reason to get a 9600 series is that they are both relatively cheap and support DX9, something the 9000/9200 (SAME card) doesn't do.

Yeah really, I've only got an 80, it suits me fine.

all those parts you listed add up to over $700. my math says its closer to $900. i say go cheap on the stuff they don't need ie. graphics, hard drive, cheaper dvd burner, 512 ram. no use spending money on things that will never be used.

i have 60gig hard drive it isn't full, still have about 18gig free.

that 60gig maxtor is $30 cheaper, it would be better for ur partents

The NEC 3500 is the best 16x dual layer DVD burner out there, and also the cheapest too I believe, so definetly get that, the sony has couple problems, and no other dvd burner has as good cd-r/rw reading writing speeds.

Anyways, your parents sound like what I call "reasonable PC users", as does your brother, so I would suggest socket 754, 2800+, 3000+ if you really think you need it, I don't think you do, and go with 1x512mb, you definetly don't need a gig of ram, get the NEC dvd burner, as much ahrd drive space as you need, as far as graphics card, I'd say 9600 Pro so your brother can at least play some "reasonable" games for the next year or 2.

You can always overclock the 9600 Pro if you want as well, it overclocks to 9600xt speeds.

Than just get some cheapo case, and an out take fan, and your set, probably a bit under budget too.
