well a 60 or 80 gig drive should and would suffice, 9600pro will be a really good choice for some gaming for the next couple of years. 512 mb ram would do, and later you can upgrade that to 1 gb .. in like a year or so. as for mobo, 754 isnt a bad choice coz semprons will still be there later.

dood, for the same price as that 160gb maxtor, you gould get a 160gb hitachi, which would be faster.

theres not that big of difference in 939 and 754 in terms of price so why not just go with 939?
512MB RAM will suit you fine IMO
ya i agree with the Harddrive get 60 or 80 for now and when you need it buy another HDD

The difference between socket 939 and socket 754, is 754 has the 2800+, and it is cheaper, and performs combarably.

The fact is, your dad is not going to need to upgrade the CPU (2800+) for the next 4 years at least, especialy since its 64bit ready, and by that time, there will have been, most likely, 2 more sockets "series" released.

So even if he wanted to stay with the same socket (754) after that 4 years, there would still be the 3700+ at the highest (which performs equaly with 3800+, so good CPU) plus possibly faster Semperons.

What I'm trying to say, is as far as upgradability, there isn't much difference between socket 754 and socket 939, unless you upgrade EVERY year, which few people do.

Even if you upgrade every 2 years, in 2 years times there will be a new socket and you will probably want to go that route, and if not, as I said, there is still the 3700+.

Lite-On does OEM for other companies. Sony is a perfect example.

Sounds good, and remember my suggestion for DVD burner, Nec 3500, its the perfect drive for a 1 optical drive system because its just as good with CDs and CD-r/rw as it is with all DVD formats. I have one and trust me its great, but you can also take a look at some reviews, every one I've seen has it out on top.

As far as hard drives, I've had the worst experience with Maxtors, they're one of the loudest hard drives, I've had and know people who've had more maxtors die than any other brand hard drive, and they have higher seek times.

Personaly I reomend Seagate, 5 year warranty, quietest drive, good speed, very reliable.
