Friend wanted to upgrade to a Dell XPS. However, I told him that for $2500, I can build a faster system than that. What would you suggest to compete with this configuration:

Pentium® 4 Processor 660 with HT Technology (3.60GHz, 800 FSB)
256MB PCI Express™ x16 Nvidia® GeForce 6800 GTO Graphics Card
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x512M)
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ Native Command Queuing
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ Native Command Queuing
Dual Drives: 16x DVD + FREE UPGRADE! 16x DVD+/-RW w/dbl layer write
3.5 in Floppy Drive
FREE UPGRADE! New 17 in E173FP Analog Flat Panel
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Total: $2499

AMD competes with Intel.

I don't have any (exact) prices but I'd reccommend something along the lines of:

Athlon 64 3800+ ($380)
1 GB low latency PC3200 RAM (doesn't have to be crazy, I don't think this guy will be OC'ing) ($130)
DFI NF4 ($150)
X850 XT ($450)
Hitachi Deskstar 250GB ($140)
NEC Dual Layer DVD burner ($60)
A decent case (reccommended: Wavemaster or Tsunami) ($100-$130)
A decent Flatpanel monitor ($200-400)

All of that should do about $1900... which leaves you $600 for a misc. items (floppy drive, cables, OS, peripherals) and a bunch of games to play on that beast.

Well friend choose these, so I don't know. But, does the 660 have 64 bit support?

Less latency with the crucial ballistix. It's faster. Seems appropriate for high-end rig.

OCZ Modstream is a very good power supply. Though there would probably be many good power supplies out there. And if not going SLI could go for a cheaper motherboard.

dude, if you are worried about 64 bit, then go with AMD. all the athlon cpu's are 64 bit..... unlike intel, where only the 600 series is 64 bit

Zalman should have some good choices for heatsink. Nice and quiet.

no, because x850XT PE is a waste of 200 bucks for results which you can easily acheive with the regular x850XT which is 200 bucks less.
Value RAM with the FX-55, uh-uh!
Why the [content edited] would you waste money on double DVD burners

I have no idea why the price difference is so big, but yea, the only difference between the 2 is minimal clock speeds, kinda like the difference between a 6800GT and a 6800U, except in that case, most 6800Ultras can go a lot further than 6800GTs.
