Morning all. Tomorrow, I should be ordering a X2 4600+. Currently have a A64 4000+ San Diego, 2 Gig Ram, 7900Gt video card on a A8N-SLI motherboard. Is this a step up in the right direction? The CPU's are both 2.4 Ghz. (All three?)

P.S. I have the AMD and Microsoft drivers/patches downloaded and waiting. Where in Windows would I go to check that I have dual core capabilities?

P.P.S. I was just looking at the Microsoft Hotfix. Its for processors that support power management features. Does that mean "Cool & Quiet?" If I don't use C & Q, do I need this hot fit?

Asus A8n-SLI, X2 4600+, Zalman 9500 cooler, 2 Gig Corsair XMS memory, 300Gig Maxtor Pata HDD, 500Gig W.D. Sata HDD, eVGA 8800GTS, S.B. Audigy 2 ZS, 750W. PC P & C Silencer P.S. Asus CD-Rom Drive, Asus DVD-Rom Drive, Raidmax X-1 case, Dell 2407 LCD monitor, Windows XP HOME w/SP2 / Windows Vista, dual boot.

it's cheaper to go with an x2 3800, especially if you plan a general upgrade to socket AM2/K8L within a year. the 3800 has a reputation as a superb overclocker.

either way, I don't think you'd notice a huge difference unless you're running multi-threaded apps or multi-tasking heavily.
