I need to build a system with -- at least -- 4Gb of RAM and fast CPUs. There is, however, no need for neither the fast disk, nor fast graphics, nor stellar network performance. This is for a home-office, so IWill's ZMAXdp form-factor is quite attractive (both figuratively and literally).

However, IWill's specs only list single-core Opterons as "tested" with ZMAXdp.

Has anyone tried to stuff ZMAXdp with dual-core CPUs and high amounts of memory?

Any other recommendations? Thanks!

according to the iwill site you linked to the ZMAXdp is not compatible with dual core Opterons, also, it only supports a maximum 2gb of RAM.

If you have your heart set on the dp, I think you should be willing to work within it's limitations. Otherwise, for less money you can build a system with a better upgrade path.

also, a dual opteron X2 system is overkill for a home office, especially if you don't care about fast drives or other components. it just seems silly to have such processing power if you're going to mate it up with a 5400 rpm hard drive.
