CPU:
Opteron 175 $505

RAM:
OCZ 2GB $205
or
G.SKILL 2GB $191

Mobo:
um..thinking about a DFI or ASUS ~$200 max

PSU:
Enermax Liberty 500w $105
or
Enermax Liberty 620w $175

GPU:
6600GT $140...or possibly something cheaper...

Acess:

So what do you guys think?

Oh by the way my limit is $2000

gskill, dfi expert, 500w.

hold-out card for DX10...

EDIT to elaborate...
you are looking for the cheapest possible card nearly you say.
so its safe to say that your gaming for the next ~8mos is going to not be that great.
is it really worth it, just for the WAIT? youd be missing out on more fun than youd be gaining by waiting for DX10.
id get something like a 7800gt now, and then sell it on ebay once you decide to get a DX10 card if you must go that route. youll still be able to game wonderfully until then, and shouldnt stand to lose more than $150.

Currently, I dont have a use for AA and/or FSAA for the most part and Im satisfied with 1024x768 resolutions and excluding the HL2 game implementations of HDR, IMO HDR is exaggerated to the point that it makes the current games that implement it look really unrealistic/ugly.oSo I really dont need the top of the line video card right now, when ET: QW comes out or they make better use of HDR Ill need something able to handle alot.I really just need something that will play DOD:S,COD2, NS, Swat4, AoE3, B&W2,SC, and maybe BF2 decently. I might consider a 6800GS/equivalent though

Oh, is the chipset fan really bad on the DFI's or is it just a few that go bad?

ok, one question though. Being as I was in my class for about an hour consisting of a lecture on theory I already knew,I read up on the expert and alot of people say the board has alot of flaws so I was wondering if I should just get the regular version since im only going to be oc'ing on air.

I have a soft spot for the Expert. What are these flaws you heard about though, Masashi?

i had a long response typed out but then i got another BSOD (weird that with page file OFF im still getting pagefile related BSODs)

basically it is a very tight and forceful installation, and one that requires lots of precision and carefulness...
and a board pull, which is the biggest deal... so if you do it right off the bat youll thank yourself

While many mobo's have RAM they dont like, some people have said that the expert is just overly sensitive to what RAM is used.

I know that DFI boards don't take well to value / cheap RAM, but also that the BIOS used has quite an influence. Certain BIOS are optimized for TCCD, and others are optimized for BH-5, etc.

I hope the RD580 likes Ballistix...

Hmmm. Good question. If the board uses a recent BIOS then the Opteron should be recognized no problem, but if it's older stock with pre-Opteron 939 compatible BIOS I think you need to flash from a bootable floppy or a CD. Might be better to let AZ answer this one, I'm not 100% sure and I don't want to give bad advice. But there's a guy called Tmod over at DFI Street and he has a very nice ISO you can download with loads of different DFI BIOS. Burn the ISO to a CD before you get the board and everything should be OK. I'm not sure which BIOS is best, though. Again, AZ or someone with first-hand experience of installing a dual core should know this one.
