Well its time to build a new pc (about time eh?) and I would love to get some of your input. Keep in mind this is a budget pc.

I'm being given the CPU so no negotiability here (x2 3600+):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16819103046

In addition I was thinking of this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?item=N82E16827136108 (DVD burner)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?item=N82E16822148230 (HDD)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?item=N82E16813138026 (mobo)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?item=N82E16814102022 (GPU)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?item=N82E16820609219 (RAM)

My dad will be bringing these things over from the US, I will be picking up a case and power supply locally so I don't have to worry about those yet.

Post away

looks like a nice comp to me. Amazing how cheap the x2 3600's are.

I agree with everything but the GPU and RAM.

The burner is good, the 7200.10 is a dang nice drive, the Tforces are good boards, however.

1. GPU--you chose the X1900GT for 131.99, the X1950GT is only a bit more at 139.99.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16814102034

That has a mail in rebate also....brings it down to 109.99.

2. RAM--your X2 can take advantage of DDR2 800, may as well give it some. With the deal above, you are saving about 20 bucks off your original configuration.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16820231098

That RAM is G. Skill DDR2 800, still 2x1GB, and only 30 bucks more than the memory you had already picked out. So really, you are only spending an extra 10 bucks. Up to you, but that's what I would do.

I have considered both things, tech, and am still undecided on both of them.

The x1900gt has better clocks than the x1950gt and is cheaper but the x1950gt is cheaper after MIR and overclocks better. Another thing to note is that I hate MIRs.

For the ram I willl be overclocking my system and most ddr2-667 ram easily does ddr2-800 and even ddr2-900 with 2.1V, but I will be running at a divider which will probably put the ram speeds between 667 and 800 in which case spending the extra 30% would probably just be a waste. Another ddr2 kit I'm considering is this - both reviewers who overclocked claimed that they were able to achieve ddr2-800 with ease and its still just $100.

What CPU cooler are you going to be using? I recommend the Freezer64Pro if you have good airflow. My X23600+ at 2.8 GHz with 1.325V has load temps of 34-36C.

That RAM is very good for overclocking. Super Talent is not very well known but they are like Team.

Yeah the X1950GT does have lower clocks than the X1900GT...I didn't notice that before. That doesn't make very much sense....

@Megadeth - I would probably go for Freezer64pro, but Newegg is being stupid and charging $30 again. If they were selling it for $15 I'd be all over it. Does anybody else know where to buy this for sub-$20 w/ S&H or any other good HSF around $20?

@Tech - yeah, i know. Its a bit counterintuitive.

@AM2 - I just wanna get something with great bang for the buck - preferably less than $150.

EDIT: wow completely forgot to talk about the ram. Yeah - I heard that about super talent too, Mega, which is why I just jumped on it when I saw the deal.

EDIT2: I'm also considering not getting a new HSF initially. When I OC this cpu I will probably keep it at around 1.35V to 1.4V. This may be a really stupid idea; opinions?

Both great cards, but either would only give a very minor performance increase over the x1900gt. Not a big enough performance to justify the price increase in my books.

Wow - - - you are sooo due! Nice looking build. Try out the stock heatsink & fan and keep your eyes peeled at the "For Sale or Trade" over at DIY Street. Great heatsinks come up there all the time - uber cheap.

Yeah, this is definitely overdue. Sounds like a good plan - I'll watch for used ones. Maybe I'll add some mx-1 to that list. Don't have any thermal paste right now.

Definitely use MX-1. It comes preapplied with the Freezer64 Pro, and I switched to it, and my temps were lower on the X2 3800+.

Hmm - maybe I'll just order the freezer 64 pro since mx-1 is like $6. We'll see.

Shoot me an address and I'll pop a tube of AS5 in the mail to you - got about 20 tubes laying around the gaming thrown. Good luck with your build and post some OC benchies if you get a chance!

I just got my Freezer64 Pro also...it's nice of them to put a square of MX-1 on, but I think they overdue it a bit...I'll probably scrape some of mine off tomorrow, as the temps honestly aren't all that great so far. Most of the reviewers on newegg agreed.

As for the HSF I think I'm going to go with SR-71's advice and get one used and put some free AS5 on from SR-71.

@SR-71 - thanks man, I really appreciate it. I'll get you my dad's address (in the US) to you soon. It would make more sense than sending it to my address (in Canada) as shipping would take longer and would be more expensive and I won't have any uses for it until the other stuff comes anyway.

Zozio,

I have an x1900GT, the first version which is 575 core/1200 memory instead of the second version 512/1320 like you have listed. It is a very nice GPU but realize that it is a slightly cut-down high-end GPU and that it does run a bit warm. It'll suck quite a bit more watts than your CPU, just a heads-up. The stock single-slot coolers on the units don't do that great of a job, especially the ones that exhaust *forward* like the x1950GT's cooler. The Sapphire x1900GT at least has the cooler exhaust blowing the right direction- backwards- but the exhaust hits the PCIe rear mounting bracket, which hinders airflow. I highly recommend that you either look for a two-slot-cooler card or get a two-slot cooler for your card. I put a Vantec Iceberq 6 that I got from a local place on my card and it lowered my noise and temps significantly. It used to hit 85 C full-load and now it does not crack 60.

Update: just ordered the stuff. I had to get the x1950gt instead of the x1900gt because the Egg ran out of the x1900gt (and also after they ran out the jumped their prices on it up to $160 ).

@MU_Engineer - As nice as it would be to get an aftermarket HSF for the GPU, I don't think that spending an extra $25 on a GPU cooler, for which I most likely will not be overclocking, is the most efficient use of my money.
