Hello all, this is my first post here, and even my first visit but couldn't find anything helpful on google so figured, why not try here.
Thing is, I'm trying to fiddle a server together that prevents silent corruption, so I was thinking about Solaris / zfs raidz2 with a scrub cron job.
I'd really like an AMD board, and I've selected an [AMD Phenom II X4 840] for the system but now I need a mobo. Does anyone here have experience with running Solaris on something like an AMD 870 chipset? I mean, I don't care if audio doesn't work, because let's face it, what are you going to use that for on a server, but I would like all the rest like network, SATA 600Gb/s and stuff to work properly.

Does anyone here have experience with that? Or someone in the position to give it a go?

Have you thought about an AMD E-350? You can get an E-350 board and processor for as little as $110. I have two of them now and they offer a lot. I won't be as snappy as a Phenom II x4, but it does have a dual core 64 bit CPU that would even support AMD-V.

I believe the A50 chipset is equivalent to AMD 870, as it supports SATA 6.0 Gbs and the onboard graphics is Radeon 6319. I have read that Solaris 11 Express runs on it (http://forums.smallnetbuilder....howthread.php?t=5069).

hadn't considered the E-350, because, well, didn't really know they existed. Heard about the Fusion processors of course, but didn't think they were for sale already.
Just took a look at a few boards, but I'm afraid that's not going to work for me. I kinda need 6 sata ports and I can't seem to find a board with more than 5. Aiming for 1 bootdrive and 5 drives in raidz2. A board like that would work fine for something else I'm thinking of, so I'll keep 'em in mind anyway

I'll take a look at the common areas of the A50 and 870 chipsets tomorrow, might just go for it then if they look similar enough.

I thought of building a Solaris(zfs+VirtualBox) bigbox on a 1090T w/ 16GB of RAM but I decided to postponed that project and go with a cheaper option as I am exploring Solaris.
I kept Linux on my 1090T for virtualization and I bought the cheapest AMD I could find for testing out Solaris.

turns out, my Solaris is running happily. raidz with 4 1.5TB Hitachi disk. Root ZFS on a CF-8GB (PATA port)
My uptime shows 80 days at the moment.

but I do not have sensors information. I think my MB/CPU isn't supported properly by the lm drivers.

I would be interested connecting with others playing with Solaris on AMD.
