ok system is as follows:

Tyan s2885 K8W w/ single Opteron 248
1Gb ram (2x 512 pc3200 for 128 use)
Adaptec SCSI 29320 PCI-X card (w/ 3 drives attached)
onboard SATA in use w/ seagate drive
ATI Radeon 9800 xt 256mb in AGP slot
EPS12V p/s using all available power headers to mobo (24 + 8 + 6 pins)

My problem is with the video card. I keep getting "stuck_in_thread" errors and I can't get some graphics intense progs to run. I called ATI and they couldn't help. All they said was flash the bios and update drivers and utils, which i have done by the book.

Any ideas, I'm open for suggestions.

IS the card a trueblue ATI card or is it manufactured by someone else? I was having issues with the Sapphire Radeon card and my Thunder K8W. I spent 2 weeks of nothing but troubleshooting and e-mail tag with Tyan. Still haven't quite gotten it to work right. Tyan tech and I came to the conclusion that it just might be the Sapphire card. If you have an Nvidia card try it. Chances are it will work. For somereason the ATI cards don't play well with the AMD AGP drivers. I'm trading my Sapphire for a Tachyon. If the Tachyon doesn't work I'm going back to Nvidia and Tyan will get more e-mails from me to retest thier compatibility.

Here since you got contacted by ATI send them this link and see what they say about it. Tyan was shocked to find out about it.

Heres my post on the issue over at ocforums.com

If all else fails try the Catylyst 3.8 drivers. They are the only ones that somewhat work for me.

i checked with ATI and they confirmed it to be a true ATI card (built by) and not a knock off (powered by ati)...

i just saw that ati put out new drivers again (2/12/04)... i'm gonna try that. next possible solution, (which is prob not recommended but i'm desparate) is to unplug the 6-pin power plug thats designed to help the agp slot.

we shall see....( i'll repost this msg on your other orig post too.)

I am considering a Tyan S2885 with dual opterons for my next system. In researching compatability Tyan tech support told me that the Fire GL and opterons are not compatible. The computer store where I buy my components indicated that they are aware of the incompatabilty of ATI cards (not just Fire GL) with opterons.

My next system will likely be S2885 (or similar, if one comes on the market), dual opterons, and a nVidia card, it being compatable with opteron, my graphics software, and S2885 (source: nVidia tech support) (who coincidentally suggests best performance is had with a board using the nVidia NForce 3 pro).

ok, so its been over two weeks and the 9800 xt 256mb card works just perfectly. the only think changed was turning off the smartgart feature in display drivers. i've setup my FPD with the dvi plugs and have digital connectivity and all games/apps are running flawlessly.

i was never a fan of nvidia and have ati both at home and work.
