Start with an AIC RMC4D2 with 15 hotswap SCA bays, 3 hotswap 120mm fans, and another 4 high speed 70mm fans in front.
Add a PC Power & Cooling 510XE.
Add Tyan Thunder K8S Pro S2882 without SCSI.
Properly install your dual Opteron 246's.
Add 4x 512MB PC3200 ECC Registered from Crucial.
Slide in an LSI Logic Elite1600 with 64MB and BBU.
Put in two Hitachi 15K73 36GB drives for your OS and applications.
Install another five 15K73 73GB drives for your data storage.
Just wish I didn't have to ship it out...

Understatement! Hearing protection IS required when working with this system.
Takes the drives ~45s to spin down, and when they do, you can feel just how much vibration they really generate. Thank gods it's rackmount.

Server: Intel (Oh no!) 2x Pent

Does the PC Power & Cooling help to add to the noise. I think the loudest components I have in my systems are the following.

PC Power & Cooling 410w 'silent'
2 x 40mm fans for two SATA enclosures.

I have six computers at home and it appears that it's these two items that make the most noise and when you consider that I over 10 drives (including two 73.4GB Cheetahs) consisting of 2TB of storage with 8 processors, it has to be pretty bad to be able to discern what is making the most noise. I hate 40mm fans, 32dB is too loud. Good grief, my dual Xeon would practically be silent (except for when the drives are working) if it was not for those stupid 40mm fans.
