Hi there!
I´ve built a dual boot sytem with Windows xp pro(32Bit)
and Windows xp pro(x64bit).

My system:
Tyan Tiger K8W S2875 with GB LAN (for €199),
Dual Opteron 242 (1,6Ghz)(for €440),
Saphire Radeon 9800 pro (I´d muchos problemos with it!(for €220),
2x80GB Sata Raid 0 and 1x150Gb Sata HD (faaast!!!(2x€70+€90)
Cinergy 400 TV Tuner(€70)
512 Mb registered RAM( very expensive)(for €160)

I´m looking for friends with the same expierience on installing and updating such a dual opteron pc. What is your experience???
I´m using it for producing and cutting videos.

my actual problems are:
under windows xp pro(32bit):
-with the radeon9800pro
after windows update the driver seems ok but I still have a VPU Recover after taprox. 15min of work -
It has no sense to use the original ati driver - it will not work usefull!

under windows xp pro (x64Bit):
WOW - windows is starting really faster(aprox.+100%).
I´m searching the 64Bit driver for the tyan built-in GB LAN pro /1000 MT

Hope to find much friends with the same power PC...
Maybe you can help me???
will read from you

i have sommit similar to this except mine was built a while ago :

- MSI Master 2 Far motherboard
- 1gb kingston registered ECC ram
- 2x amd Opteron 242
- 2x80gb SATA drives in raid 0 (samsung)
- SCSI adaptec card with 18gb SCSI U320 drive at 15,
- Nvidia FX5900XT (gygabyte)

OS's :

- WIN2k pro
caused me alot of trouble had to reinstall many yimes do many upgrades and the Raid 0 didnt help at all in all of those problems.... in the end i gave up the raid and used the SCSI drive which is faster anyways there is not argument 7,200+7,200 might make 14,400tr/mn which is near 15,000 but the performance is alot weaker..... althjough i use one of the SATA drive to make a D:/ drive to store files....

- SuSE Linux 9.1
Installed fien bit of trouble with the raid 0 so i went for a software raid with linux works just as fast as the original but well it doesnt boot up as fast as it has to create it and all....

- SuSE Linux 9.1 64bit
Just had a fiddle with it.... its fast and fun but i still have lots of problems and need to sort some stuff out..... vrey fast though with the SCSI U320 drive the raid 0 didnt work even in software so i partitioned it with windows.....

dunny you should have problems witht at 9800pro card i thought they were good... i went for Ati as they supported the 64bit beta's straight away... and the 5900XT was the choice of the moment especially at £130.....

i fi had had more brains i probably would have gone for the tyan instead of the MSI board but the £20 difference tempted me.... are there many problems with it ? the MSI had loads with the raid........ that VT8237 chipset from via really is quite poor wish i'd gone for a Nforce 3 250 (but i would have had to wait !

anyways about your problem i have experinced similar issues of performance under Win2k where the pc will freeze for 30secs after a bit of work and then start again... i did an update and deleted the raid and everything worked fine..... so maybe it is your raid....

Hi lordmozilla,
first - thanks for your post! You are from england?
Since I´d upgraded my bios to 2.03 - the problems are all gone!
(´til now...)
I will think about the tyan hardware raid again - thanks for this tip!
Hows your experience with the SuSE Linux 9.1 64bit ?
Would it be a problem, to set it up as 3rd boot os ?
Yeah, you got the 5900XT quiet cheeeeap....
