Depends what you're doing with the workstation.

Well defining what a business uses is hard. I know at my ex workplace our servers were dual 1 ghz procesors while the business machine assigned to me was a k6 266 running windows XP, an ati rage agp card, 96mb of memory, and a scsi drive (the only thing that saved it). So thats my workstation.

So you will eventually need workstations for your clients I hear. Well a lot of configurations will depend on what your client needs. Some clients need a 'workstation' for doing basic tasks, email and such. Thus a plain old amd64 would work very well. Now some clients are going to want a workstation that has quadro/fire graphics cards and opteron procesors. Some may want a mobile workstation.

Now I note you say not dell, well for Dell I would highly advice looking at there Dell Latitude Laptops, i currently own one, one of the best laptops out there.

To get an idea of what to use look here

Now to discuss parts....
Motherboards: Use good brands, Gigabyte, Asus, Supermicro, Iwill, Tyan
Processors: AMD64/AMD64FX/AMD64 Dual/AMD Opteron or Intel P4s Xenons
Video Cards: Any card can work really, FIRE and Quadro are 'workstation' cards
Hard Drives: SATA or SCSI
Monitors: Use good monitors

Thats about all i have to say, it really depends client to client.

building configurations for government agencies... thats what we do. each order our clients make will be for a specific configuration... they might order 8 of these, and three of those. but the basic rule stays the same, no matter what the application, they are after longevity, stability, quietness and compatability with their exsisting programs.
in the commercial arena, theres no place for overclocking, aftermarket devices or refurbished components. we have found that certain combinations work together very well... so we simply make our models different variations of similar components. thats what dell did in the early years... before they sold out.

give me an example of what they would use a specific system for... and i'll tell you what i would quote.
