Is there an advantage of having 2 265 dual core processors over a single 265 (or the 4800 FX) if the primary function is statistical analysis and Microsoft Office appications?

i think if its just for that even 2core might be overkill, so yes, 4core is a waste

A single-core would be able to easily analyze statistics and run MS OFfice apps. You don't even need dualcore, that's overkill. And "quadruple-core", well, that's way past overkill /tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' />
