I currently run spreadsheet(s) with lots of calculations that takes many hours to run on an Intel Pentium 4 based machine. I'm looking to split the job up and run across multiple PCs/Workstations (or whatever you call them). I can submit 2 or more jobs to one machine (eg if it has multiple processors or multiple cores). Any recommendations for which AMD CPU would be most suitable?

Thanks
Richard.

athlon x2 should suit well for this. amd procs have higher IPC (instructions per clock) and therefore can do calculations much faster than that pentium 4.

here's an x2 for $154:

I like the price! Any idea how this would compare to a dual core Opteron? Or are Opterons not worth the money? (ie would I be better off getting two Athlon machines?)

athlon x2 = opteron pretty much. but what opterons are you talking about? socket 940 server ones or socket 939 desktop ones? i would get the x2 anyway, they are amazing performers for the money.

I wasn't talking about any specific Opteron - just wated to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Sounds like the Athlon X2 is worth trying out.
Thanks!
