I'm looking into building a new workstation. Would I be able to use Athlon 64 (S939) processors on a dual processor MB (S940)? If not, how do the Opteron CPUs compare to the Athlon 64 as far as performance? With the A64, you have the 3000+ 3200+ etc; with the Opteron, you have the numver series (144, 244, etc).

Thanks

opteron = athlon (for the most part)

all opterons have 1mb L2 cache

165=1.8ghz duel core
170=2.0ghz duel core
175=2.2ghz duel core

the biggest advantage to the opterons is the ablility to overclock to the extreme.
the 165 oc's to 2.7ghz, 170 oc's to 2.78ghz, and i don't know what the 175 does.

144=1.8ghz single core
146=2.0ghz single core
148=2.2ghz single core

these also can way overclock. see "cougar" for his overclock, he has one of the single core processors up to 2.9ghz!
he has a 148 overclocked to 2.9ghz

if you go to www.chiefvalue.com

http://www.chiefvalue.com/app/...x.asp?linkid=1&store=7

you can check out all the processors there and compare them.

you will be needing the 200 series processor for a dual processor mb, i dont think you will be running apps that will require an 800 series opteron. tyan, iwill, gigabyte, and msi all have great boards for dual opterons

are you going to switch to a 939 pin motherboard? the specks i listed above are for 939.
please remember overclocking is not guarenteed, you also need to have a good motherboard, (asus and dfi are the best for overclocking), good ram, good psu, and really good cooling. there is a lot involved when it comes to overclocking. again one of the biggest advantages of opterons is the ABILITY to overclock.
don't forget it also voids your warrenty!

Iwill's DK8ES board is a work of art... if you are serious about a dual venus or italy rig... there is one great solution. if extra bandwidth is what youre after, opteron is what you want!

I just got a dual Opteron 270 (socket 940) workstation built. While I'm not overly impressed by it's interactive speed over a Althon X2 4200+ (blame it on the OS), the number-crunching power is exactly where it should be (awesome!

The downside is that the two CPUs generate heat and hence noise tags along in the way of fans...

Go for dual-proc Opterons (165/170/175/185/265/270/275) tho'...
