hi there all i'm just posting this here one to get to know a little more about unlocking cpu's i've been doing a little searching around but haven't really found any good pages about it since i'm kind of curious of it i was hoping that someone in here can explain a little both how to do it and also what it does and what it will do for a system so if anyone have some experience both good and bad just let me know alsi i guess i'm not the only one that is wounderring and also i'm pretty new to much of this here so if you feel that i'm comeing with dumb questions go right ahead and let me get it (feel free to laugh at me )
unlocking cpus means that you are making the multiplier changeable, this is for overclocking. in the AXP you can unlock them with a pencil but it only works on VIA and SiS chipsets,. it voids your warrentee. its different for A64 which I know nothing about.
Since you didn't specify which AMD CPU you're talking about, it's difficult to give the correct answer. Some AMD CPUs came factory unlocked...some can be unlocked using the pencil trick or a wire mod...& some are "super-locked", which means they can't be unlocked no matter what you do.
FSB is where the real performance gains are found. A higher FSB affects the speed of the entire system...CPU, RAM, motherboard chipset, etc. The advantage of an unlocked multiplier is so you can lower it, then raise the FSB even higher, but still keeping the overall CPU clock at a reasonable speed. For example:
20 x 100MHz (200FSB)
15 x 133MHz (266FSB)
12 x 166MHz (333FSB)
10 x 200MHz (400FSB)
All of the above will run a CPU at 2000MHz...the 1st one is slowest due to it's lower FSB...the last one is fastest due to it's higher FSB.
