I'm not one for racing car games, but I've got the old NFS Underground and it's good fun for 2 or 3 games. Outrun was awesome in it's day too, but I get too bored with racing car games - so I end up playing something else. It's good fun on a network though.

Add another selection, Burnout 3, which completely owns any arcade racer out there hands down. That's my choice along with GT.

Personally I keep coming back to one racing game.... but it doesn't fall into your categories.... Super Mario Kart (For SNES)... I've been playing it with my roommate for weeks now....

As for Real Car Racing Games:

Sega GT (either 2002, or Online, or the one for Dreamcast)

NFS Series (all of them)

GT = Gran Turismo? If so, close second.

Well I like RFactor and you can get the demo here www.bhmotorsports.com
It is not for you nfs'er it is way too hard for you guys. It requires a great deal of driving ablity and it is great fun when you can cut a 1:05:00 lap time. You know you are on the edge of disaster and using all the track and a little of the dirt. Notice I said a little dirt , thats because you need to keep two wheels on the track at all times. Have fun and enjoy it Iam.

EA's F1 and the GT series for me. NFSU is fun but 'fun' for me means simulation not arcade.

How about the old Sega Genesis motorcycle racer Road Rage or Road Rage 2? I loved that game. It was fast and you could upgrade to a better bike(s) as you got more money. Not to mention, you could take swings at other bikers, at they at you! lol

HARD CHOICES!

Depending if were talking about realism then:
Gran Turismo
and
Colin Mcrae

Just flat out fun gameplay:
Need for speed underground
and
Burnout 3 (although I really hated that they didnt not include a manual transmission in the game)

Replayability:
Colin Mcrae (just like smashing stuff)
Burnout 3 (again im fond of blowing stuff up)

i am a large fan of F1, not so much now, but back in 2000, the battle between Hakinen and Schumacher was immense (99 season too as all fans will remember). of course, now i do not watch at as much - it is more boring IMHO with no rivalry toward schumacher (well some, but somewhat INCONSISTENT rivalry). but, that is besides the point.

in terms of games, there were two different versions of Forumula 1 that came out. there was one produced by EA, and another one produced by another company who acquire the proper FIA license.

so my vote also: FIA Licensed F1 Series

Good to see I wasn't the only one to notice the exclusion of NASCAR Racing 2003 Season from Papyrus/Sierra.

Other vote is of course the Gran Turismo series

Best driving game to come out (IMO) is Grand Prix Legends. Been using the game since 1998.

Hundreds of add-on tracks, car graphics upgrades, utilities, etc. put together by a many different people from all over the globe.
