Ever since I saw this forum about folding for the AMD team, I switched over to this from SETI. I have several computers going. However there is something that confuses me. I have a 3200 AMD 64+ processor with 1Gb of ram running winxp pro and a bone stock laptop running a P4 2.8Ghz mobile processor, 512MB or RAM running WinXP home sp2.

Which one do you think would bench higher? The AMD? nope. My laptop benches higher. Weird or is Intel just better at this?

P4 2.8Ghz laptop = 6988

AMD64 3200+ desktop = 6552

Well, I dont know about the Benching numbers, but I would go by the speed at which the work units complete. Like, My 2700+ T-Bred B makes VERY quick work of my sisters P4 2.4B @2.8ghz. Its not even close. The 2700+ does about 4:15 per frame on a tinker, and the P4 does about 5+ mins per frame. Maybe it benches higher because of SSE2? I dont know. But I do know that the Rating system AMD has, is just about right on in the Folding arena.

- Biostar TA990FXE
- 16 GB's of some flashy Crucial RAM
- Buncha HDDs sucking up way too much power
- Win7 Ultimate x64/Ubuntu x64
-A lot of other crap that I can't remember.
- Wurd?

I am not sure of what you are talking about with those bench scores.

I do know that I have two XP 2500's one at stock and one running 11 x 2000 (XP 3200 speed) and both of them running alike Tinker cores are faster than the two P4 2.8 that I have folding. The stock XP 2500 runs on average 35 seconds faster per step. Doesn't sound like much but works out to 3.89 hours on a 400 step Tinker core. Again these comparison were done on the same Tinker cores. I haven't checked the differences running Gromac cores.

Oh, I guess I am the only one who notices the benching scores. I run my computers off of the console version.

"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\FAH500-Console.exe" -verbosity 9

Put a -verbosity 9 on the end of your FAH command and look at what it benches your computer at. I have it running on a old 800Mhz system with 128MB of memory running Linux Fedora Core 1. It benches at 192. Poor indeed.

Athlons are better by far. My 2500+ was consistently faster than my dad's P4 2.53GHz and the P4 2.8GHz I used at my job. And my 3500+ simply screams. Btw, I personally use -verbosity 4. 9 throws a little too much extra junk in the log for my tastes.

You guys don't think that it is strange for my P4 laptop to bench higher than my AMD64?

There's any number of things that could be influencing the result. It might not be the processor at all that's causing the difference. Also, I don't know exactly what the benchmark is measuring which makes it difficult to know what the results mean.

How long have both machines been benching? The benchmark score is determined by how fast you turn in WUs. If the P4 hasn't been folding for a long time, then it's going to have a higher benchmark score for the time being.

oh ok. That makes a little more sense.. Now that I look at the log file, actually that would make sense if it didn't fluctuate. The first time I started folding on the laptop it benched marked at 6808, then a little later at 6988. Last benchmark was 6808. So it doesn't seem like its going to be any lower than my amd64. The highest f@H benchmark for my Amd64 is currently 6636.

How high is the benchmark on your fastest processor Ardrid, if I may ask?

My 3500+ is in the realm of 7200 or so. My 3000+ DTR is in the 5000s or so (its also had a lot of downtime).

Hey Ardrid, does your 3500+ fold 24/7 ? That laptop I was telling you guys about, just turned in a bench of 7280.

I only let it fold from the morning to night. Too loud to leave on at night.

Yeah, she's 24/7. The only time where she's not running 100% is when I'm playing Doom 3 or watching a movie.
