So.. yeah. Folding locks my machine. No BSOD or anything, just a straight lockup. it happens at random times, with the console (5.02) and visual (5.03). Ran stable before, just won't do it now. No idea why.

Will it Prime for hours on end and run OCCT 30min and stress tests with no problems?

If it won't do those then get Memtest out and check with that for a good few loops.Wouldn't hurt to check heat aswell.

Does F@H discard any WUs beforehand?

This is a RAM problem, not a CPU problem, I can guarantee that much.

No WU's are discarded.

It runs P95 for 8-12 hours straight, non stop, no errors or crashes

Memtest runs for 8 hours without any errors or crashes.

Can't figure it out.

Run Prime with the memory stress portion. If it does that for 12 hours, move to the blended. If it does that for 12 hours, move to the max CPU test (in-place FFTs, all on-die cache used). One of those will fail. That will tell you where the error lies.

They all go through 12 hours fine. I had already tried going through all those.

Oh and my PSU is an Antec 500w somethin somethin... somethin... It's new, everything on it reads fine and within paramaters (brother is an electrician and I had him test it for me) He says everything is within 2-3% of it's rated settings.

I'm just going over your specs as listed in your sig. I'll assume that they're correct, and I'll limit my theories to the statistics and settings discussed within the thread.

I've had similar issues before. Granted, it was with a Newcastle core, but very similar. I used to run my 2.0GHz Newcastle 3200+ @ 2.5GHz for ever at a certain speed, but occasionally Folding would lock it up tighter than a drum.

It boiled down to the overclock. I'd recommend retreating to 2.2GHz at stock vCore, then attampting 2.3, then 2.35, then 2.4. Walk your way up slowly. Ultimately, it becomes an issue of "how much voltage do you want to add", or you hit the physical (electronic?) limit of that particular stepping. Venice cores are supposed to overclock better than Newcastle cores, but not every stepping is an overclocking godsend.

Take it slowly, and good luck

First thing I suspected was the OC on my processor/ram/video. So I killed everything down to stock. It still locks.

I guess I'll give up folding on this machine for a while (maybe let some new versions come out) and I'll set up my old system (2600+ athlon xp 266fsb) to fold at 100% 24/7. If I can find a spare HD for it.

Hmm....well are you sure this is folding? The PC just doesn't do this anyways? I've got the board, and it can do some random things....

Mine would BSOD off an on until I set the "SATA Drive Strength" to strong in the BIOS. Also, the board's vcore isn't constant at all, it varies a lot. Maybe try upping it a bit if your voltage starving it right now. Same for RAM voltage, the Asrock board's voltages are all over the place.

Also, just curious, what temperatures are you getting?

Odd, tried all that. and the vcore voltage on mine varies also, wife's varies too, but it's actualy stable very close to what bios sets them at ( .02 vary up and that's it). oh well
Like I said.. it's odd I can't fold but.. whatever.

My system does everything else I throw at it. I can run prime 95 for 24 hours straight and it's happy. I can run memtest and get no errors. I can play bf2, hl2, cov, WoW, whatever and it takes it all in stride.
The only thing that messes up is folding.... it's a bit frustrating but after the new price cuts I'm going to get a dual core (if they drop in price too) and I should be getting some new ram for my bday (2 gigs! YAY! Hopefuly these changes might allow the folding. I miss folding.

Although I CAN fold, I just have to watch it and if it locks up I just reboot and keep going.... It's not instant.. it's anywhere between 5 minutes and 2 or so hours. Which I do fold while watching Dvd's or what not.

Not sure what to suggest here. Not to sound condescending or anything, but the next culprit I'd point a finger at would be the motherboard.

OTOH, my wife's Asus A8N-E developed some interesting lockups while running her Venice 3500+ at "only" 2.53 GHz. I dropped her back to stock clocks and no issues since. Not exactly the same scenario, but similar as far as the overclocking goes in relation to Folding.

That's just it.. I've removed the OC.. even underclocked.... tried different ram... tried another processor... the only thing I havn't actualy swapped out is the mobo and I'm starting to lean twords that... all in all it doesn't really bug me that much. I've moved to the console version of F@H and it locks up less... but instead of locking up all the time the program will just drop out and exit on it's own. The program killing itself off however is a bit nicer than an entire system lockup.

In the end, I will replace this mobo with something with better OC options but that will have to wait untill x2's or opterons go down in price so I can afford a dual core that I'd really want to mess with.

Like I said before, I still fold... always will. Soon I will get my old xp2600+ back up and have it fold 24/7

I've got the same motherboard on 2 PC's and it doesn't lock up on either. Maybe something about your configuration...I dunno.

No idea... *shrug*

I've tried everything at stock or even underclocked. I'm just thinking something is a bit weird..

Although after just forcing folding to go and rebooting as nessisary... it only locks up now after about 6 hours or so.

Weird thing is, it doesn't drop the WU and start a new one ever... it will resume and complete it's work.

My guess right now is I have a small section of ram that's bad, but it doesn't crash in games so I have no idea... I'll be getting new ram around xmas at the latest so whatever, it's all good.

if you think its your ram. then run memtest86 on your pc for about 12 hours or more and see if it comes up with any errors

I've run memtest for 24 hours straight, Prime95 torture, cpu, and ram based all for 12-18 hours each.
None come up with any errors, Ever.
A few days back I thought maybe something was overheating.. so I took the side of my case off and put a box fan next to it and directed my AC vent twords the back of the box fan. Lowered my cpu temp by 7c at full load.... Still locked.

Like I've said before, it still locks up, just not as much, and that's fine by me since it doesn't drop the WU's, it just resumes and keeps going till it finishes..

That's a really screwy scenario you've got going there, 255. Actually, TBH... it could be another peripheral locking up and we're just pointing the finger at the usual suspects.

Can you pull the Smart data off your hard drive(s) with SpeedFan? Can you verify your GPU fan (if any) is running correctly? Any peripheral quirkiness we ought to know about - you know, Firewire-connected dog shavers, etc?

I've seen all but the dog shaver lock a comp up before, come to think of it, and we always started out with the usuals... CPU, RAM, core logic and Northbridge. Not those dog shavers tho... they're bullet-proof.

The smart data on my main drive says "9 unreadable sectors assigned by an offline scanning program, this can be fixed by a something something something (basicaly meaning low level)" that's the only problem with any of my drives... although not exactly sure that'd cause the problem, but it's possible. My sound card is a bit twitchy.. doubt that'd kill it though... Computer runs fine when gaming, downloading, etc etc. Only locks up while folding.

Oh, and no external peripherals... just a USB2 dog shaver... which.. might have an issue since it's the USB model and not firewire... *Shakes fist at dog shaver*
