Don't suppose many of you run SMP client as currently it's only for 64bit Linux.I know Megsy(Megadeth) and Mizzou Engineer have been going neck and neck for a while both running it and getting some good points.1760 point units that finish in pretty short time are pretty good ppd's.Pity I run WinXP.

There will also be a points adjustment soon. There has been a big discussion of the points system and the bonus units in particular after all the fuss about the 2124,2125 and 2126 units being so slow.Lots of people were dumping them because they took so long to do being for standard pointers.

Anyway, the new client is rumoured to be for 32 bit Windows and is in alpha testing currently. No clue as to when it'll be ready but I can't wait.I'll be switching my dually over when it comes out aslong as there are none of the same problems associated with the Linux client, apparently that one hangs at 100% sometimes.

cool sounds interesting but leaves me with a dilema... do i continue gpu folding (which ties up a core) or do i dump the gpu folding and put both cores to work with the smp client? can anyone speculate on which option will give the best points?

I should think you have 2-3 months leeway till you have to make a decission AM.I have a feeling that the points for each are going to be similar with the gpu just edging out in front to reward your investment in the hardware.

I've been running the 64bit linux versiona and have had great success..... IT has never failed. The has been only one instance, and it was not the clients fault, I left my machine in windows too long for the weekend my son and I were playing games. The WU's expired....... all my fault

But as a whole, I am happy with it's performance. I just need more horsepower under the hood!

The Linux SMP client runs very well. I'd like to test the Windows version in Vista. It would give a good indication of how slower Vista really is.

But regardless, this is good news.

Nevermind, I think I'll go back to running 2 instances until this smp stuff gets out of beta.

Just loaded this onto my system to give it a go. Will post some frame times and stuff later when I've done a few units.

I had a little trouble with it as it asked whether I wanted to install as a service and I said yes. One of the bugs is it can't be worked as a service, not well anyway, and it therefore took an hour and a half to complete 1%. Looks to be going considerably faster now I've got it sorted out.

Under Windows you have to have a password on the account you are using.

I am currently installing the SMP Client on all my Boxen, at least I won't get the current rise and fall in points per day you get with the normal Client.

Yeah, I had to create a password specially for it. You also need Net framework 2 and while it's running you need to keep the dos window open. Make sure you don't install as a service either. I automatically hit the service install even after reading the bug list and it didn't like it at all.

I first set it up on a Q6600 (Quad-core @ 2.9 Gig) does a p2610 in 12h 30m, so when I was happy after a week or so, now that I have the time the dual-cores are now being swapped over.

No problems with deadlines for you then. We should see your points roughly double I think after you get all those machines humming.

action_man, why not do a little experiment and test the combination of a single CPU client + GPU versus the SMP client and no GPU? The GPU will do much more actual work than the SMP client will- probably 20-30x more- but Stanford's points system is a little hard to predict which will get more points.

My x1900 GT GPU + one CPU client on my X2 4200+ under Windows XP (32-bit) gives me roughly 600-700 PPD on average. The same setup with the 64-bit Linux SMP client yields me over 1000 PPD, so it's a no-brainer for me as I also use Linux as my main OS anyway. A "full" R570/R580 with 48 pixel shaders like the x1900XT/XTX or x1950XT/XTX will perform much better than my 36-shader x1900GT or the similar x1950 Pro. I've also not run the Windows SMP client, but from the noise on the FAH forums, the Linux versions are roughly 50% faster.

If I had to give a wager, I'd think that you're probably better off using an x19x0XT/XTX card and a single CPU client than using the Windows SMP client. But you'll only really know if you try them all out yourself.

the x1950xt gets me ~450ppd on its own the xtx gets around 600ppd. it will be interesting to see how the smp client compares

You've set it up wrong somehow then.Which services are you seeing active in Task Manager?

There should be...
1 fah.exe
4 FahCore_a1.exe
2 mpiexec.exe
2 smpd.exe

My SMP is turning in 800-920ppd avg dependant on unit and how much gaming I do.
