I have my x2 4800 back folding now. Running the Linux version of SMP on Fedora 7. Frame times are quite a bit better than using Windows XP.

Who is going to be the guinea pig to grab a Phenom?

I fold with 7 comps for about 115,000 points per week.

When are you going to put some of that power our way again Datsun?

Kazgirl has a Phenom. I wonder if she'd try it out?

Will see in the New Year, once I hit 3,000,000 points.

I only have to run 8 comps to double the team's daily output.

MikeB12...I see your running you laptop also. So am I, but your running SMP on it? I dunno...I guess I'm knid of scared with the heat output. I guess mine is a little different with that 3.4GHz P4 HT in it. I'm just using the standard gromacs console client and I'll hit 68C. That's after I took the laptop apart, pulled the heatsinks and fans to apply some OCZ Ultra 5+ thermal paste. What do your temps hit with you folding on yours?

Anyways, the rig in my sig is my main contributor. I used to run the multi-GP consoles when I had two X1600s in here, but unfortunately, still no new client to run on the HD 2900XT. I used run SMP, but I didn't like dealing with Vista's security features all the time. Now I run the beta gromacs console client and it's been smooth sailing. No EUEs, wierd erros or anything like that. I run two of them. One in the background while doing non-demanding things on the computer, or two when I'm away. And yes, I run them at this overclcok or higher and haven't had a problem.

my other contributor is my HP Pavilion ZD8080us:
Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.4GHz
2x512MB DDR PC3200
ATI Radeon Mobility X600 256MB
Windows XP MCE 2005
with HP xb2000
beta gromacs console (Contemplating SMP becasue of MikeB12)

Sometimes these run 24/7, sometimes hours out of the day, or sometimes not even at all. I currently just broke the top 100 on team ATI (51394) a few weeks ago, so I'm pretty stoked. I guess I'd be more serious into folding if I could get my HD 2900XT folding or SMP wasn't as much as a hassle on here in Vista. So I'm contributing, but not really getting mucho points. I'll try SMP on the laptop and see if it fries the CPU or not.

the smp runs on the p4 2.8ghz, but it takes 3.5 days to complete and the deadlines are 4 days, so it has to run 24/7 to finish.
my temps are 60c pretty consistently, but that's with a targus usb mat under it and a ceiling fan on in the room. the room has 3 other comps in it, so the ceiling fan stays on all the time. if I let that room stay stale (like the fan gets turned off by accident, since the switch is right next to the light switch), man it gets hot in there. so I'd imagine it would go up past 60 without the air circ from the mat and the ceiling fan.

kinda of a oxymoron of a term-laptop. every laptop I've owned cooks when you put it in your lap, like in a car or hotel room.

here's the mat I use http://www.tigerdirect.com/app...dpNo=2119012&CatId=607

Yeah, I can't use the mat becasue I have the xb2000. It's doing the same temps with SMP now so I'll see how this lasts. This might be it's only run on SMP becasue I don't like having the laptop on constantly. The power brick gets pretty darn hot too. Dang pentiums. But at the time, this was the fastest "laptop" AKA desktop replacement laptop around. Maybe I can shave half a day off with the 3.4GHz?

On a side note, I noticed you have 2GB of RAM. Did you start out with 1GB? If you did, does the extra GB make a noticeable improvement; i.e. worth the cost of putting in new RAM? I had Vista beta 2 on there before, and it ran fine, but I switched back to XP MCE 2005 so I could play BF2. For some reason the 32-bit version has more gaming compatability problems with older games than the 64-bit version does.

actually mine came with 512mb ram-LOL! but it never even got used, since I ordered 2gb and the accessories like case, mat, and a 7200rpm drive from NE while I was waiting on shipment. I still have the drive it came with as an external usb. The first time I powered it on, was with the new parts and a restore disc-xp media center. the first life the orig drive saw was in a usb external case. anyway this is the NB before I got my paws on it: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfr...jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
I bought in 2006, so it was older tech when I bought it.. paid around 650 for it IIRC. been a while.

I put Vista on it for grins once, but moved it back to xp. seemed much faster with xp.. plus the builtin card reader in it didn't have a vista driver.

now that I think about it, I think I mispoke. it was reburbed... so it was used when I got it.. http://compuvest.com/ they have some good NB deals, but you have to dig through tons to find them, some are ripoffs, which I guess is how they make their profits...

Vista Beta 2 worked with my card reader, the texas instruments one. Anyways, my ventures into SMP gain have failed. I jsut came home to see an EUE. error 74B which means overclock/overheat failure. It's jsut too much for that CPU in that state. So back to the regular console client.

Another side note (hopefully the last). I found siabling extras like the wirless adapter, quick launch buttons and things like that can shave off a few minutes per percentage done on the work unit. Of course you'd need to enable it all again before the unit finishes so it can send the project back and retrieve a new work unit. I bought this thing when it was new and loaded it up pretty good with just about every option (except the 2GB of RAM). $3,800 in the end....Now you can spend a grand and get great perofrmance, longer batter life and less noise and heat. Thanks for the help Mike!

yeah, that's the card reader I have, the TI one. I never tried to use it or get it to work. just noticed they had no vista driver for it and it failed the little vista compatibility test I ran on the pc before installing. now in hind sight I wonder if the xp driver woulda worked.. it's gonna stay xp now anyway, don't think I could stand the slowness of Vista on it compared to a desktop vista 3ghz quad and dual I'm used to.
