Hi i am new to this forum (i came across it looking into the amd 64 fx ) .
I am looking to upgrade my old 1.4 amd (runs fine but i am greedy) to the amd 64 fx as i am a bit of a games addict and belive this may be the future for games .
What i want to to know is what i have to beware of when building it up , i have done minor things to my pc before like changing gfx cards , sound cards , hard drives etc so i am not a completed idiot.What i also want to know is what mobo , memory and do i need to get the best from the cpu ( at a fair price ),is it true that it will only run with a certain type of ddr ?
Also what else do i have to change taking into account my pc is now 2 years old ,is the power supply one of them? any help and advice links urls will be very much apreciated .

I am (well, was) in the same situation as you, my friend. My Athlon 64 FX machine isnt built yet but I did some heavy research and ordered the parts based on reviews as well as recommendations. What will be in my soon-to-be FX machine is listed in my sig; you should look into these parts. Hope this helps!

EDIT: I also suggest you look through the threads on this forum. Most of the posts contain very helpful advice on what to get, what to watch out for, etc.

In terms of motherboard, I'd recommend getting the ASUS SK8V. It's a solid board that shouldn't give you any problems. In terms of memory, get some that has tight timings. I'd recommend Corsair's XMS LL series' ">http://www.newegg.com/app/View...473&catalog=147&depa=1. Make sure you buy registered memory though because normal memory won't work with the FX. And you're probably going to have to change your power supply, depending on how much power it can support.

As for Power supply it might be worth to wait till January for new Enermax EG701P-VE SFMA.

ATi is going to release RADEON 9900 PRO very soon but ...
the main reason is that ATi is going to release HX480 engine including 64 bit for Athlon 64, so time is to save the bucks and hold for a while, unless you are filthy rich.

For gaming it is not worth to dump so much $$$$ for Digital VIDEO editing it will be a must!

In addition PCI Express also is going to be realeased soon, so no rush to hit big bucks on GRAPHIC card at this time.

There are several advantages to the Asus board, but the N is NOT going to do the same performance job for you as the V series as someone suggested earlier. The N series uses the Nforce chipset, which does not support HyperTransport the way the VIA chipset does on the V series. In benchmarks, the fastest board on the market for the AMD 64 was the MSI which beat out the Gigabyte and both versions of the Asus (N and V). The Gigabyte, however, had some nice options that, if a small performance decrease is acceptable, are worth looking at. It has dual ATA controllers, so it supports up to 8 IDE drives, PLUS SATA drives. Also has the ability to hook up external SATA drives. There is a comparison of all the AMD 64 supported mobo's on Tom's Hardware.

nVidia3 PRO 150 might not, apparently ASUS with nVidia3 PRO 250 suppose to excel even over VIA K8M800.

Only time will show ...
