Hi,
I have an Orion MS-7168 vers.01 and AMD Athlon 64 3400+ and would like to upgrade the processor to AMD Athlontm 64 X2 4200+ (ADA4200DAA5BV) but need to be certain they are compatible.
The mobo is socket 939 as is the X2 4200+ but my concern is that i can only find information listing support for AMD Sempron, Athlon 64 and Athlon 64FX processors.
links to my mobo and the x2 4200+:
Orion MS-7168
x2 4200+
Thanks, Ian.

Going soley on the specifications I would say no. The BIOS is probably not programed for the Athlon X2 line of 939 processors.

It is an OEM board made y MSI, based on this:
RS480M2
http://www.msi.com/index.php?f...ncat_no=1&prod_no=167
The original MSI version does support X2.
Did you see if PackardBell has provided BIOS updates for this board?

In this translated thread there is a user that appears to have an X2 3800+ in that motherboard.

Just found this thread via google.
Did you get any joy with running a dual core chip in this board? (i've got exactly the same machine, seems to have been erased from history as far as the manufacturer sites are confirmed!)

I've been looking for an updated bios for about a week now and this thread is the nearest i've come to a solution!
All the links i've found relate to before PB changed their website layout and everything gets redirected to the "country selection" and doesn't go to the requested link afterwards.
There MUST be an update out there somewhere, mine doesn't even recognise a 1TB drive correctly, it shows as 100g in the bios but is fine in windows.

That would be great, thanks
email to bigbadstevieboy@hotmail.com please
Much appriciated.
If it works with the bigger drive, i might just pick up a cheap dual core and give it a try, if it doesn't work i can always sell it on again.

Unbelievably, a very helpful person has advised me that they are actually using an AMD 4200 x2 with an MS-7168!!

I'VE DONE IT!!!!!
So, I thought "what the heck" and got myself a 4200 x2 and just installed it - and it works perfectly! Amazing. I'm so happy, my pc lives on. The only original component now is the MS-7168 mobo, which may well turn out to be immortal at this rate.
I didn't eben need to re-install xp! I did ensure I had the latest BIOS and installed the AMD dual core optimizer, which is available from the AMD website.
I guess that's the end to this saga.
Ian
