Would the opteron 252 or the 64 fx 55 be better for gaming?

definatley the FX55. the Opteron has to use error-correcting RAM (more $$, which is better as a central server, but is worse for performance and speed.

the FX series is for high-end gaming, the Opteron is for servers, the Athlon64 is for mid-range gaming, and Sempron are the budget systems.

dual opteron will only be useful if you plan on doing video editing and playing games at the exact same time

but it wont speed up gameplay at all, as the game would have to be programmed in such a way as to take advantage of dual-CPU, and none are.

Single core CPUs will reign supreme in gaming for a good 2 years or so. The AMD FX-55 looks to be one of the fastest gaming CPUs for quite some time, there will be some faster single cores but not that much faster.

Nothing can beat a single FX-55 in games right now at stock speeds of course.
