Seeing that the venice cpus will make their introduction very very soon at 3500, 3800, and 4000, how much longer do we have to wait for the new San Diego FX-57? Since last month i have been stocking up on new parts (X850 XT PE PCIe Dual DVI, Maxtor 300G, Samsung 1100DF, Enermax 600W PS, 2*512MB OCZ PC-3700 Platinum, various new DangerDen watercooling parts) all because i thought that when the venice cpus come out that there would hav ebeen the FX-57 to be released along with them.but NOOOOoooooooooooooo! When, thats all im asking, when will they come? If you look at this unofficial roadmap Un-official roadmap' ">http://www.c627627.com/AMD/Athlon64/ they seem to think in Q3 sometime, jesus thats quite a ways away still isint it? I know Q3 could mean the first week in july, but it could also mean the last week in september!

um, if you waited until the FX-57 came out, you could probably have bought all those components (or better ones) for less price.
why not wait and buy all the stuff at once? or in meantime, throw in the cheapest priced winchester 3000+ and wait.
you should never plan around CPU roadmaps.

you should never plan around CPU roadmaps. Well to answer your question, towards the end of march, i was lead to believe (at the time) that the FX-57 was comming out in the first couple weeks of April (i mean all the tech sites were predicting a mid-april release), so with that in my mind i figured id take care of all the smaller things i needed to buy for my upgrade, leaving me with just the cpu and probably motherboard left to get. If i knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this cpu wasent going to rear its head until september then of course i would have waited with getting the other parts.

Hmmm. I am ordering everything all at once. If that means I have to wait for the Venice or San Diego cores then so be it.

actually, i'm surprised its not out yet. i hear the FX-55 is hard to find in stores, so that would lead to the assumption the FX line was being switched over to FX-57, leaving a dwindling stock of FX-55 .
maybe they got complications on setting up the line? that would suck, because then FX chips (any FX chip) would be next to impossible to buy.
plus, this was posted in march 2005:
QUOTE According to unofficial sources, AMD’s Athlon 64 FX-57 processor at 2.80GHz made using 90nm Silicon-on-Insulator process technology will be released in Q2 2005. By the time the AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 hits the market, the Sunnyvale, California-based chipmaker will have launched its Athlon 64 4000+ (Q4 2004), Athlon 64 4200+ (Q1 2005) and Athlon 64 4400+ (Q2 2005), some sources said.
and this was posted on a more reliable tech site, April 2nd, 2005:
QUOTE Rolling the 90nm Die
Happily, AMD has been hard at work improving its existing line. The company's first 90-nanometer-process desktop core, "Winchester," was a straightforward shrink of the 0.13-micron "Newcastle"; it quickly found its way into Athlon 64 3000+, 3200+, and 3500+ models using Socket 939 packaging.
However, the Athlon 64 3500+ was as far up the ladder as AMD climbed with 90-nanometer technology; nor did any of the Socket 754 processors make the transition. Since the higher-clocked CPUs would benefit more from the die shrink, this first Winchester wave was more than likely a test phase to not only perfect the 90-nanometer process, but also ensure yields on AMD's lower-cost chips.
Meanwhile, we have the Athlon 64 3800+ as the sole Socket 939 Newcastle (0.13-micron) model left, since the Athlon 64 4000+ uses the even older "Clawhammer" core. Both of these are due for replacement by new core designs -- codenamed "San Diego" and "Venice" -- that will prove Winchester was just the tip of the 90-nanometer iceberg.
The newcomers represent AMD's second-generation 90-nanometer core, with San Diego (1MB of Level 2 cache) supporting higher-end Athlon 64 and Athlon FX models, just as Clawhammer does today. Venice (512K of L2 cache) will be the mainstream part, superceding Winchester as the basis of most Athlon 64 939-pin processors.
Both new cores will support SSE3 multimedia instructions, use strained silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, and feature improved memory controllers and the ability to reach higher clock speeds than their predecessors.
Where this gets interesting is that as of April 4, the Venice core will be shipping in Athlon 64 3000+, 3200+, 3500+, and 3800+ Socket 939 processors (identified by the retail-box notation BP). On April 15, the Athlon 64 4000+ will join the 90-nanometer generation using the San Diego core (and box notation BN).
Naturally, the upcoming Venice models are already drawing serious attention from enthusiast buyers, as the 90-nanometer core's lower heat and potential for higher overclocking are both big attractions for performance buffs. This news has launched a great deal of activity in hardware forums and chat rooms, resulting in a constant watch over the online vendors.
It's a bit surprising for AMD to release a new core revision via an existing line, especially since the San Diego core is reportedly set to shine in Athlon 64 4200+ and FX-57 products due in the second and third quarters of 2005, respectively. According to prerelease information, the Athlon 64 4200+ should slot in above the 4000+ as a small alteration of the 2.6GHz Athlon 64 FX-55, while the hot-rod Athlon 64 FX-57 at 2.8GHz would represent the new top of the AMD line. These high-end CPUs would obviously make more of an impact alongside a new core introduction, but the financial drawbacks of just sitting on a viable 90-nanometer core would have been too much.
so it may indeed be Q3 for the FX-57, while all others, even the 4200+ built on same core as FX-57, to be in Q2.
but then again, other sources say Venice cores (3000+ to 4000+) released April 4th, and Sand Diego cores (both 4200+ and FX-57) on April 15th. so if you see a press release from AMD tomorrow, read it and cross your fingers.

I'm waiting for one too. Have had most everything else sitting in boxes waiting since the beginning of Feb. Not worth it to break down and get an FX-55 since I got 4gb of RAM that I want the new memory controller for.

Add me to the list of people waiting for the FX-57 to hit store shelves. Whether or not I will be buying it depends on it's price, though.

You can pretty much expect it to cost in the $1000 range, which is about what the previous FX series chips cost at release.

-Adam What do you think the Athlon64 4200+ will cost?
I may have to settle for a 4200+ to save some cash for a decent video card. I don't mind not being able to overclock, anyway.
$1,000 is a hefty sum to lose on a chip! O_o

Probably similar to what the 4000+ cost when it was released, about $700-800 USD.

C'mon AMD, you've got paying customers waiting on you here... Amen to that!!! What the [content edited] is the hold up? Waiting for a newer release of some intel cpu before you launch the FX-57.
And here i thought all the time when you had the enemy down, you went in for the kill. *sigh* how weak.

Well, the FX-57 could whoop on nay Intel in gaming so I'll wait patiently. I wouldn't buy Intel no matter what anyways.

I'm in a similar situation, I just have a HIS Excalibur IceQ-II ATI Radeon X850XT-PE PCIE to purchase and an FX-57, the latter of which is not in existence. Am I mad? I want performance!! I'm guessing it'll be around £700, which is a reasonable price I would gladly pay for.
I feel in absence of a fast machine at the moment, I recently sacrificed my AMD 64 3200+ to a friend... it was a big mistake, I'm so lonely

With the 104 Watts the FX-55 puts out, I would be scared to see heatsink they would need to include with the FX-57.
I'm thinking it will be a refrigerated unit, and will need to be applied on a layer of dry ice instead of thermal paste. You will need to re-apply the dry ice for every hour of usage.
Seriously though, these FX-55's are anything but slow.
I'd grab the 55. There is always something new around the corner (the FX-59 will probably come out soon after), so in theory, you'll always be a step behind buying a new machine.
If you got the 55, I can't imagine that you would be disappointed, though I understand the addiction to the cutting edge
I thought about waiting for dual-cores, but I decided to get the best that was available at the time.

fx-57 will be using the new 90nm SOI with DSL tech (san diego core)....if anything it'll run using less watts and dissipate less heat than the fx-55.

there's some interesting news been posted over on the overclockers.co.uk forums this morning regarding FX57. QUOTE Right the good news is that we shall be making the following available on pre-order within the next couple of days:- Athlon 64 3000 Venice Athlon 64 3200 Venice Athlon 64 3500 Venice Athlon 64 3800 Venice Athlon 64 4000 Venice ??? Athlon 64 3700 San Diego Socket 754 Athlon FX57 We have spoken with AMD UK they estimate first batches to appear in approx 2 weeks, but I do however take AMD's leadtimes with a pinch of salt as they normally turn out to be 2x or 3x longer than they say. Pricing will be more than Winchester due to supply and demand issues....... posted by Gibbo, here towards the bottom of the thread.' ">http://forums.overclockers.co.....php?t=17397012&page=6 Gibbo's the purchases guy for www.overclockers.co.uk so i'm going to take what he has to say seriuosly.

I'm looking forward to the FX-57 because of its revised memory controller (and the additional 200MHz on the clock), I'm using 2GB of RAM, which will not run that well on the FX-55. Do correct me if I'm wrong though, it's always handy to save a few pennies for the missus!

The ASUS A8N boards support this just fine, even though the native memory controller will try to underclock it. Simply set 400 in the BIOS, and off you go ....
Of course, the FX-55 will probably run at 2.8Ghz vs. 2.6 on the FX-55.
I imagine that will be the main difference - but with all else being equal, clock speed increases beyond a certain level yield slightly diminishing returns the higher you go.
The FX-57 will undoubtedly be faster, but I don't know if I would wait too long for it. But it's your money
