basically, the layer of thermal contact paste on my retail heatsink has a few tiny holes in it, if i hold it up to the light at an angle i can see the metal, however its quite a rough surface so if i press it down it may smooth out, what should i do?
is this ok??

I thought the retail HSF came with a thermal pad.

Anyway, if yours didn't then here is what to do:

If applying new grease, use about a paper thin layer or just a tiny bit thicker.

If it is already rough, then go ahead and spread it over the metal!

But, if it is the micronized silver type of grease, make sure you don't get it anywhere other than where it is supposed to be...because it is electrically conductive, and you can short out components.
