I built a new system, but I am having CPU over heating problems. Without a Game running my tempature is 47 degrees celcius. I am running the default heatsink and the default thermal paste. The problem that made me investigate is that when I played Counter-Strike: Source may game kept on crashing and looping the sound. Also, this is my first build.

AMD Athlon 3700+ SanDiego

2 gigs of patriot ddr memory

160 gig Western digital

Onboard Sound

Asus A8N SLI (I'm not running dual graphics cards.

Aspire X-crusier case

Asus cddrive

Rosewell 19" 8 ms monitor

I was gonna put on a Zomla CNPS9500 heat stink, but im a chicken and i dont want to void the warranty.


I am also considering some artic silver 5.

You guys have any solutions/suggestions?

There have been quite a few of these threads, so look around.



In the mean time, try the following:


1) Remove your CPU Heatsink/Fan and clean-off the existing paste using rubbing alcohol and a towel.

2) Re-installe the CPU, and place a small amount of paste on the chip...about the size of a pea ( a *bit* less).

3) Install the heatsink and make sure it's fastened-down to the mobo's socket.


For the past few scenarios here, that has worked for other users. Give it a shot!

CBI Elite is exactly right; that is the first thing you should try. If you want to take a look, here are directions for applying thermal compound as per the Arctic Silver website:
