I just bought an Asus SK8V (VIA K8T800) motherboard and an AMD Athlon FX-53 CPU. I looked at the specs on the Asus website and it says it supports Socket 940 chipsets. However, I looked on the AMD website at the FX CPUs and it says they are Socket 939.

My question: Which chipset is it? Is there more than one? Will my CPU be compatible with my motherboard?

Please any help would be much appreciated.

FX 51 parts were only 940 Pin CPUs. FX 53 is where they started the transistion to 939 pin parts. However, they were also available in the 940 pin version as well.

Therefore, you could have either a 940 or 939 pin CPU. Did you buy a retail box or OEM unit?

Also, can you read the OPN off the top of the CPU? That will tell you which version you have. As for your board, it is a 940 PIN board. Therefore, you will need a 940 Pin CPU along with Registered memory since that is what the 940 pin FX parts use.

It is Retail. Model#: ADAFX53BOX. I am not sure as to the OPN number because I have not recieved it. Is retail bad? good? does it matter? I bought it off newegg.com. The core is sledgehammer.

retail isnt bad,

retail - 3 year warranty from AMD and u get a heatsink n fan with it

OEM - just the processor with a 30 day warranty from the reseller (newegg) and you have to buy the HSF (heatsink n fan)

i think retail is better if your not going to OC.
