Just installed the AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP 1.2.2.2, no problem on my pc. But when a friend tried to install it on an identical pc, he got the error that it couldnt read his boot.ini.

Has anyone else had this problem, and cn offer a solution?

what are the system specs? try to update the bios and try to redownload the drivers. it could be that the file is not there or currupt.

Hmmm.... It would be very odd that installing a driver would cause a corrupted boot.ini file, but whatever.

You can rebuild the boot.ini file by doing the following:

1) Put your Windows XP installation CD in the CD drive.
- Note: if you only have a recovery disc, this will likely not work (alternate instructions below)

2) Reboot and press a key when prompted to boot from CD.

3) Press 'R' to run recovery console.

4) Select the Operating System (Windows XP)

5) Once prompted, enter the Administrator password (this is THE Administrator account, not your usual user account; if you have not installed a password for this account, simply press enter).

6) At the command prompt type "bootcfg /rebuild" (without the quotes).

7) Follow the prompts, pressing 'Y' if the program correctly identified your operating system(s).

8) Enter the load identifier. Simply put, this will be the name that appears at the multiboot menu if you have one. For example, I would enter "Windows XP Professional".

9) Enter OS load options. When you see this prompt, simply type " /fastdetect" and press enter.

10) Once you have completed the above steps you should be back at the "C:\>" prompt. Type "exit" to reboot the computer.

Alternate Instructions:
You need to find a friend who has the same version of Windows as you. If you have XP Professional, you need to talk to someone else who has it, etc.

Copy the contents of their boot.ini file into a text document (you will need to go to "Tools->Folder Options" and make sure protected operating system files and hidden files are not hidden).

Back on your computer, go to the Control Panel, and go to "System". Go to the "Advanced" tab, and in the fieldset that says "Startup and Recovery" click on the "Settings" button. Click on the "Edit" button, and paste the contents of the text document you created from your friend's boot.ini file inside. Make sure it looks something like the following:

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOUR SYSTEM CONFIGURATION DIFFERS VERY MUCH FROM YOUR FRIEND'S, SOME OF THE PARAMETERS SPECIFIED ABOVE MAY BE DIFFERENT. DO THIS ALTERNATE METHOD AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Also, unless you have a custom boot screen or have otherwise hacked your copy of Windows, make sure that there is no " /kernel" attribute.

Save the file upon exiting, and click OK until you are back to the desktop. Reboot your computer. This should take care of you.
