Help ! - I fell into the Asus AV8 Deluxe BIOS trap. I have an AMD 64 4000+ 939 (lidded) with a Gigabyte Rocket Tower Heat Sink on top with the thermal paste applied. The MB has a loaded BIOS version that doesn’t support this chip. – Therefore the Chip & heat sink is stuck in a brain-dead Motherboard. The socket 939 clip is underneath the heat sink and can’t be raised.

What is the best method to remove the chip from this motherboard with minimal risk to the CPU. (I really don’t care about the MB – because I’m going to have to get a new one – one way or the other…The only way I can get this to BIOS rev. 1007 or greater is to have a different AMD processor!

I would think that you would need to get the heat sink off first and then raise the socket clip and remove the AMD chip. I can't get the CPU & paste "warm" - because the I can't even do a POST.

I don't want to damage the processor during the extraction. Any suggestions on proven methods would be most welcome.

Rotate the heatsink left and right while applying and 'pulling upwards' pressure. Do not just pull straight up without turning it. The paste does not have to be "warm" for you to remove the HSF.

After you pull the HSF off, there will be a silver lever. Pull this lever upwards so it makes a 90degrees angle with the MB. Now, just lift the CPU off of the motherboard.
