I had recently upgraded from a single core AMD 64 3800+ to a dual core AMD FX-60. While I did notice a slight bump in performance, I still felt like things were a bit sluggish in games.

I decided to get some numbers to figure out if my perceptions were incorrect. Now, I know a lot of you out there are going to say that 3DMARK06 is meant to make your system look like crap, and that it isn't a realistic benchmark. However, what it does provide is consistency. I and anyone else for that matter can run 3DMARK06 on any other system to have it spit out a number that we can compare with if I run it on my system as well.

Some of the clock speeds look a little incorrect as reported by 3DMARK06... but, I'm not too familiar with the software.

The CPU speed looks about correct. The score on it seems right.

However, a total 3DMARK06 score of 3196 for a system like mine seems somewhat low. I've seen comparable systems with FX-60s, my same motherboard, and a lower end 7900 video card to over 4000. So, what going on???

I'm not multitasking while I run the test...

Any help would be appreciated!!!

you have 3 gigs of ram... take one out and verify that it is running in dual channel mode.

Update 2/11/2007

It is running in dual channel mode.

I also borrowed a friend's 7800 GTX vid card, and it also showed performance numbers matching almost the same of my 7900 GTO. My 7900 GTO on his system however bumped his 3DMARK06 score up 1000 points!

So, it's clearly not the vid card itself.

I'm down to a few culprits:

A> Windows XP install

B> Motherboard defect

C> Nforce 4 chipset as a whole


C is very unlikely as many people even with the same motherboards, CPUs, and GPUs are receiving the right scores in 3DMARK06.

I think a RAM problem is highly unlikely to drop video score so low.

I've bought two extra MBs this weekend. One is an EVGA nforce 4 SLI motherboard (same chipset), and the other is an ECS no name with an ATI chipset.

If I replace the motherboard, and I have the same performance problem, it would lead me to believe it would be an XP install issue. Any opinions to the contrary? Note that when I say XP install issue, I mean XP and any other crap I might have installed after installing XP.

Problem solved...

I replaced the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with an EVGA nForce 4 SLI Edition...

I had to re-activate windows, but I could tell from the first game I loaded that there was an improvement...

My new 3DMARKS06 score is 5788. Again, that is 5788 from 3100 and change... POS ASUS...

It really makes me wonder how long it's been this way. Even with my previous video card (6800 GTS), I always felt like I was getting these almost random micro pauses in games...

Supreme Commander plays like a dream now compared to before... It's literally like I have a whole new machine...

Right... That was the reason why I bought two motherboards. I was hoping the the EVGA with the same Nforce 4 SLI chipset would work.

In MOST cases, when you are running the same chipset motherboard, you can get away with not having to completely reinstall windows xp. It did still however detect that enough changed that it wanted me to re-activate it... which was kind of a pain, but I can live with that.

PM on it's way... Supreme Commander is going to rock...

audio drivers would change, bios would change... even if i got exactly the same motherboard, i would re-do winblows, just to be safe and not screw up anything.
