I am building a new system for myself and see a whole bunch of AMD Athlon XP processors to choose from. I need a way to find out how they are different. For instance, what is the difference between the 2400+ and the 2800+? Why all the different #'s? Is it just clock speed or are their functional differences? I have been an EE for quite a while but am not familiar with some of the new terms (nemonics) so please use words insted of short hand in response. Thanks.

Well, first and foremost, the difference is in their performance....obviously, an Athlon XP 2800+ will perform better than a 2400+

In the specific case you posted, the difference is core-clockspeed, FSB and L2-cache.
The AXP 2400+ is clocked at 2.0GHz with a 133MHz FSB and has the Thoroughbred-core which has 256KB L2-cache - The AXP 2800+ is clocked at 2.08GHz with a 166MHz FSB and has the Barton core with 512KB L2-cache.

O.K., thanks. But in that specification the 3000+ and the 3200+ seem to be identical except for the clock speed which causes the thermal for the 3200+ to be higher. Plus if one contemplated using the 64 3000+ instead what would be the differences? I guess I just miss the IC data books that we used to be able to get so I could satisfy my curiosity. Quite possibly I am looking a bit "to closely" at the situation but it's my nature I guess.
