Topic Title: Sempron 3000+ or AMD athlon XP??? My computer doesn't know!

The front of my computer says the processor is an AMD sempron 3000+, but the device manager says its an Athlon Xp, and it doesn't give me any numbers (2200, 2500 ect.) Nothing. So, how do i know which one it is? Or are they the same? And then, where the hell do i find the drivers for it, as the AMD website gives no help, whatsoever. PLEASE!!!? Will someone tell me what my computer refuses to?

No drivers required.

I'm assuming the sempron 3000 is a socket A version.

The motherboard bios decides what to call the processor. If the sempron 3000 is running at the correct speed(12x166~2000MHz) it should be named correctly. If it's not the bios will look in it's database and pick something which fits the speed.

So if it says Athlon xp 1200MHz for example the bus speed has changed to 100 instead of 166 and needs to be reset.

Hmm...it's running at 1.18...is that a bios problem? How do i fix that?

As I suspected, the bus speed has change to a "safe" 100MHz.

Why that's happened is difficult to pin down. You should be able to reset it to 166 in the bios setup, but there may be a weak link in the hardware chain such as a failing power supply or failing capacitors on the motherboard. Or it could just be that you need to renew the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

Without more info on your hardware we'll be shooting in the dark.

Actually, it's been running at 1.18, since the day i got it....But:

1024 megs of DDR ram
Maxter 251gb hardrive
Nvidea Geforce FX 5200
Processor unknown(Lol)
Hmm....power supply....250w max?
Mother board is an Asus...that's all i know. lol.

Anything else you need?

Did you buy the pc new?

Have you made any hardware upgrades since you bought it?

The motherboard model is usually printed on the board. Otherwise cpu-z will give some useful info. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

The power supply sounds like it may be on the light side. There should be a label on the side of it with the spec.

I did buy it new...about 4 years ago. lol.

The video card, the RAM, the hardrive, and the power supply are all upgrades. The RAM is less then a year old, the video card 2-3, The hardrive is about a year, and the power supply less then a year.

Also, CPU-Z says my processor's name is AMD Athlon MP, but the specification is AMD Athlon XP...weird....

Um, the motherboard(Mainboard?) is :

The motherboard is an FIC, not an Asus. Anyway it should be able to run at 166 under normal conditions.

You have two different memory modules installed which, on an nForce2 chipset can cause problems. I suggest you remove one of them for the time being. Ideally you could do with a dual channel kit(two identical modules).

There may be a jumper on the motherboard which needs to be changed in order to run above 100MHz bus. I looked on the FIC site and it appears your board is an oem item. The closest thing I could find was this http://www.fic.com.tw/support/...oard.aspx?model_id=137

Otherwise you should be able to set the cpu frequency to 166 in the bios setup. At the same time you need to downclock the pc3200 memory to 166/333 ddr to run in sync with the cpu. It's currently at its spd clock(200/400 ddr). There should be an option to change the memory clock from AUTO or SPD to MANUAL.

I would renew the motherboard cmos battery and make sure that power supply you bought is up to the job. If it's a really cheap, lightweight turd it may not be.

I know you asked for help via PM, but from what I can see bogey is doing an awesome job.

Reading threw his advice I agree 100% with all of it.

To recap

Remove the memory that's not the same as the other. All DDR ram must be of the same make model speed.

Enter your bios and re set FSB to 166.

Check all other settings and make sure there inside recommended specs.

Once done and CPU is still not being detected correctly then we can address the next steps.

Oh, by the way, the reason cpu-z calls it an MP is because the L5 bridge configuration on a socket A sempron is the same as an MP. As it's only running at 100 bus, the bios just assumes it's an MP.

Okay. So, i followed your instructions, however, when i attempted to changed it to 166, saved, and exited, it gave me a blank screen, and di nothing, which i knew was the processor was set to something it couldn't handle, so it wouldn't start. So, i pulled the battery, and waited a bit, so the bios would reset, and i switched it to 133. That one worked at least, and it's currently at 1.5, instead of the starting 1.18, which is still a big improvement. Is there any reason it would not be able to go to 166, but it could go to 133?

At 133 bus, the speed should be around 1.6GHz give or take a few MHz.

Look in bios in CPU info or main screen please and tell me your listed CPU model.

Okay, here is what i did, in order.

Shut down computer
Took off side
Removed memory stick on left side
Turned computer back on
Hit F2 to enter bios
Entered advanced chipset options
Set processor speed to 166
Changed memory from SPD to 166
Hit F10 to save and exit
Computer did not restart, screen did not come on. (I have had this before)
Removed CMOS battery, and unplugged from wall. Waited 5 minutes
Restarted computer
Hit F2
Entered Advanced Chipset options
Changed to 133
Did not touch memory settings this time
Restarted computer
Wrote back asap

I looked everywhere i could, but nowhere in any options, or anything, does it mention what my CPU is.

That's not really enough juice.

You really want this sort of spec:
+12V - 20A
+5V - 30A
+3.3 - 30A

And a decent recognised name-brand power supply. Going cheap is a false economy.

You may get away with running at 133/266ddr with the two memory modules installed for the time being, but you need to use a memtest boot disk http://www.memtest.org/#downiso to test the memory beforehand. But looking at the timings they may be incompatible. Certainly try if you like, but avoid booting to hard disk. If the board has three memory slots you have the choice of running in dual channel(usually the two outer slots) or single channel(usually the first two slots closest to the cpu. You're safer in single channel with non-matching memory.

I'm 99% sure it's a sempron 3000 running at the wrong speed. I'm sure if you had the hardware it would run at 166. And if the bios dates from 2005 it should recognise it as a Sempron.
