Hi all, this may require some of you to think back a few years, but I hope someone can help.

Can anyone give me a link to something that definitively says what the settings should be for my processor? Like a manual or AMD web page?

My PC with an Athlon 2800XP processor is still holding on to life after nearly seven years... but for some reason my PC has forgotten the correct processor settings, resulting in a reported speed of 1350Mhz.

(Plus for some reason my graphics card is running at AGP 1.5x, when it should be running at at least 4x - it goes up to 8 in theory).

I've not done this before, but I understand that I'm supposed to adjust the FSB and Multiplier settings. Only thing is, I don't know what the settings should be as the only manual I have (for the motherboard) doesn't say, and I haven't managed to the find the info on the AMD site.

My current settings, according to AMD's Fuzzy Logic software: FSB 100, Multiplier 13.5 = 1350
Motherboard: MSI-6712, KT4V 1.0: MSI Website KT4V page
I guess when I know the settings I can just input them to Fuzzy Logic, right?

Oh, and one more thing: Anyone know if this could be related to power issues?
My power supply has been playing up, perhaps motherboards automatically adjust if there's not enough power to go round?

Thanks,

T

P.S. As I have no idea if there're different models of my processor, here's a pic to help those folk who know these things:

Hello, Welcome to the forums tinothompson!

The settings for the CPU speed you are looking for are 13.5 x 166, sounds like the FSB setting in the bios reset. and is now 100mhz. the AGP bus also reset. sounds like everything defualted to fail-safe. a power spike from the PSU could have prompted that, usually a failed boot attempt does this. The CPU may be holding on too life, but your PSU, or even the motherboard could be falling to pieces. I would advise against spending any money on repairing it. the Power supply you could,m but I would recommend getting an over powered one in preparation for a newer PC, just in case.

I had a clients PC that I built 9 years ago do this to her back in August, was running an Athlon 1600+ for her, a few years older than yours, but the bios kept resetting to fail-safes. I tried a newer power supply that I had laying around, didn't solve the problem. finally she just asked for a new PC. I built her a decent quad-core system for $350 using 0 parts and pieces from the first PC. a replacement board for her old PC would have cost her probably $100, so cost benefit, a new PC might be the best option here too.

There are a few different 2800+'s

but you have the 13.5x166MHz DKV3D model...

PS 0246 = pre lock week code...

your cpu is probably unlocked !

Thanks so much to all of you for looking back into your mental history books for me, especially to Lobster who confirmed my suspicions about my power supply being a possible culprit.

I didn't know about the existence of 'failsafe' settings or that motherboards could get worn out too.

I agree that spending a penny more on this PC would be madness, as the value of the whole thing is probably £80 or so.

One more question: Now that I know the right settings, should I try changing the bus speed, or is there some risk of burnout or something just as nasty? I'm hoping you'll say the worst that could happen is it will go back to the failsafe settings.

Should be OK to set the bus & RAM to 166MHz(333MHz DDR). Note that your CMOS battery may be weak, unable to keep settings if the power is disconnected.

Thanks again, I'll give that a go.

I may look into getting a fresh battery too as its probably very tired after all these years.

It didn't occur to me but I suppose I could just take the battery out if I wanted to reset the settings anyway...

Thanks,

T

If it is the original power supply then it may be time to replace it.

But also check motherboard capacitors for signs of bloating and/or leakage.

FYI was searching around and this is what I found for lock dates:

. 2003 week 46 and later Bartons and Thoroughbreds are locked.

. Some weeks 35 to 43 are locked, some are not, and that includes Thoroughbreds, Thortons and Durons.

. There are rare cases of post 2003 week 46 unlocked Bartons and Durons.
